Elizabethtown Holds Off Alvernia, 3-1

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 30, 2021)- Elizabethtown College (9-4) held off Alvernia University (6-9) to come away with a 3-1 win over the Golden Wolves Thursday night in non-conference women's volleyball action at Alvernia.

In the first set of the night, the Blue Jays started strong with a 10-5 run to open up the contest. Alvernia brought it back within two as Taylor Suto's kill capped off an Alvernia run. However, the Blue Jays proved to be too much in the first set, winning 25-15.

The second set started much the same, as the Blue Jays jumped out to an 11-5 run to open up the set. Despite Sophomore Rachel Sipling picking up five kills in the set, the Golden Wolves fell 25-13.

The third set showed Alvernia's resilience as two service aces by Olivia Frutiger, as well as a kill by Sipling, gave the Golden Wolves an 11-6 advantage. The Blue Jays battled back though knotting the contest at 17 apiece late in the third set.

Once again Alvernia relied on Frutiger and Sipling as both were able to pick up the set clinching kills. The Golden Wolves took the third set 27-25.

The fourth set was another back-and-forth affair as halfway through the set the teams were tied 14-14. Two kills by Sipling helped guide a 3-0 run as Alvernia shot out to a three-point lead late in the match. Despite the push, Elizabethtown went on an 11-3 run to close out the contest and win the set 25-20.

Sipling led Alvernia with 16 kills along with seven digs. Suto recorded a team-high 21 digs and Alexis Schwenk dished out 20 assists.

The Golden Wolves return to action Tuesday at home against Lancaster Bible College.
