Second Half Push Leads Ursinus Past Alvernia, 42-6

Bears Score 28 Unanswered In Second Half

Collegeville, Pa. (September 3, 2021) - After trailing just 14-6 at the half, Alvernia University (0-1) was outscored 28-0 in the second half to fall 42-6 to Ursinus College (1-0) in the 2021 season opener.

After Alvernia won the coin toss and deferred, the Bears took their opening drive down the field for a 73 yard drive that was capped off by a 6-yard touchdown pass to put the Bears up 6-0. Ursinus' extra point attempt was good as the Bears took an early 7-0 lead.

Alvernia's first drive stalled after moving the ball 42 yards down the field. The Golden Wolves held strong on Ursinus' ensuing drive to force a punt by the Bears.

The Golden Wolves used their ground game to get their momentum rolling on its second possession of the game. After being pinned back on their own three yard line, Malcolm Carey rushed for eight yards to give Alvernia some breathing room. Carey then broke off for a 54 yard rush to give Alvernia a 1st and 10 on Ursinus' 35. An unsportsmanlike penalty on the Bears after a 19 yard rush by Lorenzo Green put Alveria in a 1st and goal situation on the Bear's 7-yard line. Carey capped off the drive for Alvernia after breaking a tackle and rushing into the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown. Alvernia's extra point attempt was blocked as Ursinus stayed ahead 7-6.

On the next drive, Alvernia's Jamel Fleming would force a fumble on the first play of the drive. Alvernia's Tajon Whiten recovered the loose ball to give Alvernia possession on Ursinus' 33.

The Golden Wolves would go 4-and out to give the ball back to the Bears.

Alvernia and Ursinus would trade possessions for the majority of the second quarter. With 2:13 left in the half, Ursinus took over on their own 26-yard line. Ursinus quarterback Jack Psenicska would complete three passes over 20 yards during the drive to move Ursinus down the field. The drive was capped off by a 35 yard touchdown pass by Psenicka to give Ursinus a 14-6 lead going into halftime.

Alvernia would struggle to move the ball in the second half, moving the ball just 88 yards in the second half.

Alvernia's first two drives of the second half would stall, and the Bears found their rhythm in their second drive of the half. Ursinus would score on a 13 yard touchdown pass that was nearly broken up and appeared to hit the ground, but was ultimately called a completion to give the Bears a 21-6 advantage.

The Golden Wolves put a solid 60 yard drive together on its next possession, but an illegal motion call against Alvernia took back what would have been a 4th and 7 conversion. Alvernia could not convert on the ensuing 4th and 12 as the drive would come to a halt on Ursinus' 25.

Ursinus took its next possession 75 yards down field and capped it off with an 11 yard touchdown pass to put the Bears up 28-6.

Alvernia couldn't get anything going on its next drive, but the Bears kept their foot on the gas. Ursinus would score again, this time on an 8-yard rush, to go up 35-6 with just under eight minutes remaining.

The Golden Wolves would turn it over on the first play of its next drive. Ursinus took it over on a short field at Alvernia's 28 yard line. A 22-yard touchdown pass by Ursinus would put the Bears up 42-6.

Alvernia's final drive would go for 22 yards before punting it away with 1:21 remaining.

Ursinus would run out the clock for the 42-6 win.

Carey led Alvernia's offense with 113 yards on 20 attempts.

Alvernia's loss saw three quarterbacks under center, with Nick Rosahac leading the way with seven completions on 11 attempts for 67 yards.

Neeko Scurlock led Alvernia's receiving core with five receptions for 32 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Jamel Fleming, Tyzhir Morris, and Tajon Whiten each finished with eight tackles.

Ursinus was led by quarterback Jack Psenicska who threw for 255 yards on 19 completions with five touchdown passes. Samuel Ragland led Ursinus' ground game with 179 yards on 23 rushes.

Alvernia returns to action next week with another road game. The Golden Wolves head north to Hartwick College to close out non-conference play.
