Alvernia Rallies For 3-1 Win Over Baruch

Bethlehem, Pa. (September 4, 2021) - After dropping the first set, Alvernia University (1-2) won three straight sets to take the 3-1 win over Baruch College (0-3) in the final match of the 18th annual Greyhound Premiere, hosted by Moravian College. 

Back-to-back kills by Rachel Sipling tied things up at 23-23 late in the first set, but the Bearcats were able to score the final two to take a 25-23 first set win.

The Bearcats and Golden Wolves traded the lead early in the second set before a 5-0 run by the Golden Wolves put them up 13-8. Alvernia extended its lead to 19-10 after three straight attack errors by the Bearcats. A kill by Sipling would go on to seal a 25-15 set two win for Alvernia to tie the match at 1-1.

Alvernia jumped out to a dominant 12-1 lead in the third set, which was capped off by back-to-back service aces by Olivia Frutiger. After extending its lead to 22-10, Alvernia capped off the third set with three straight kills, including two kills by Taylor Suto

Following an early 2-2 tie in set four, Alvernia jumped out to a 6-2 lead after a quick 4-0 run. After Alvernia extended its lead to has many as nine, 19-10, Baruch made a late push to bring it within five at 22-17. Kills by Sipling and Chrissy Eguaoje made it 24-17 and an attacking error by Baruch sealed the 25-17 set win for Alvernia and 3-1 match win. 

Sipling registered 13 kills on the afternoon and Suto followed with 12 of her own. Alexis Schwenk finished with 18 assists and Gabrielle DeLucca finished with 15 digs. 

Suto also earned All-Tournament honors for Alvernia. 

Alvernia returns to action on Wednesday with its home and MAC Commonwealth opener against Eastern University.
