Bullets Down Golden Wolves In Double OT

Reading, Pa. (September 8, 2021) - In the 74th minute, Gettysburg College (3-0) took a breakaway down the field and fired a shot past Alvernia to break a 3-3 tie and down Alvernia University (1-2) 4-3 on Wednesday evening in non-conference field hockey action at Alvernia.

The Bullets took an early lead, scoring in the eight minute after Gettysburg's Lauren Beccaria got past Alvernia goalie Lexi Boettcher and scored on an empty cage.

Gettysburg then went up 2-0 after Beccaria had two shots saved by Boettcher only to have the third attempt find its way through for the 2-0 lead.

Alvernia got to work, cutting its deficit in half when Alvernia'a Hailey Miller wrangled a cross that went off the goalie's pads and fired it into net to make it 2-1 in favor of the Bullets with eight minutes left in the half.

Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter, but Alvernia tied it up at 2-2 when Rori Caulfid scored on a rebounded shot by Brooke Spezialleti.

Alvernia then took the lead with just over three minutes remaining when Caulfield deflected a shot attempt by Madison Potthoff into net to put Alvernia up 3-2.

Just over a minute later, Gettysburg was able to tie it up at 3-3 after converting a penalty stroke opportunity.

In the first overtime period, Alvernia held strong as the Bullets were able to fire off 10 shots. Boettcher stopped six attempts on goal to keep Alvernia fighting into the second overtime.

In the second overtime period, Potthoff fired off an early shot that went just wide of the left post.

As the game ticked into the 74th minute, Gettysburg went on a breakaway as Charlotte Lacey dribbled past an Alvernia defender and then fired a shot by Boetcher for the 3-2 game winner.

Boettcher would finish the night with 13 saves.

Alvernia returns to action on Saturday at Wilkes.
