Alvernia Drops Two on Opening Day of 2022 Season

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 15, 2022)- Alvernia University (0-2) opened its 2022 campaign with a 3-0 loss to Marymount University and a close 3-2 loss to Mount St. Joseph on Saturday afternoon at Alvernia.

In the first set of the 2022 season, Alvernia scored the first point which came off an attack error from Raymond Tarasi. The Saints quickly responded, securing the next three points. The rest of the set was back and forth, with neither able to secure a strong lead.

Alvernia was able to secure a slim three-point lead late in the set. Despite this lead, the Saints were able to bounce back and go on a 7-0 run. This was enough to give them the edge and let them take the set, 25-21.

The second set started back and forth with both teams trading points. Marymount was able to gain momentum, taking a three-point lead, making the score, 13-10. The Saints continued to apply pressure, ending the set on a 12-4 run, and securing a 25-14 win.

The third set saw Marymount pushing the pace, taking a quick 6-3 lead. The Golden Wolves were able to keep fighting despite the deficit, as first-years Christian Mosley and Nick Cummins helped bring Alvernia's offense to life. Despite this effort, the Saints' offense stayed hot and secured a 25-21 win. Marymount defeated Alvernia, 3-0.

Tyler Anderson tallied seven kills and four digs during the contest. Mosley recorded seven kills, six digs, and one block assist in his collegiate debut.

The second contest had Alvernia pitted against Mount St. Joseph's. The Lions started fast, jumping out to a 14-8 lead. The Golden Wolves continued to battle, with Aidan Wunderly picking up two kills to cut the deficit to two. Despite the offensive push, Alvernia would eventually fall, 25-22

The second set started back and forth, with both teams going on small runs. Wunderly helped give Alvernia a slim lead, with the Golden Wolves going up 21-18. The Lions would not be denied though, as a 7-3 run would lift them above Alvernia 25-23.

The third set is where the Golden Wolves' offense started to gain momentum. After a slow start in which the Golden Wolves were down 11-6, Alvernia fought back and with a huge spark from Cummins were able to draw the contest even at 14 apiece.

Cummins and Mosely were able to take advantage of the Lion's defensive struggles in the third set and helped the Golden Wolves secure a win in the third set, 27-25.

The fourth set started back and forth, with neither team able to take control. Mount St. Joseph's was able to take a slim three-lead late in the fourth set. Despite this, Alvernia powered through as Cummins once again provided the necessary spark. The Golden Wolves claimed the fourth set, 25-23.

Alvernia jumped out to a quick 4-2 lead partway through the fifth set. The Lions' offense was able to bounce back, pushing the score to 8-8. Mount St. Joseph's continued to apply pressure, eventually securing the set, 15-9 and the match, 3-2.

Wunderly recorded 13 kills, six digs, and one block assist in the loss. Mosley continued his strong day, tallying 12 kills, four digs, and two service aces. Cummins finished the contest with 13 digs and seven kills.
