Hudec's Overtime Goal Lifts Alvernia to 2-1 Win Over Western New England

Wyomissing, Pa. (Jan. 2, 2022) - After Western New England University (5-6-1) tied the game up at 1-1 in the third period, Alvernia University (4-6-1) was able to net an overtime game-winner to defeat the Golden Bears 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's ice hockey action at Body Zone.

Off a pass from Olivia Gilida, Shae Hudec found the back of the net after just about two minutes of overtime play to lift Alvernia to the 2-1 overtime win.

Both teams were held scoreless in the opening 20 minutes of action. Alvernia had the only power-play opportunity of the first period, but was unable to get a shot off. Alvernia goalie Julia Beaven made 13 saves in the opening frame to keep the Golden Bears off the board.

The Golden Wolves fired off five shots in the opening four minutes of the second period, but WNE continued to keep Alvernia off the board. At the 6:27 mark of the second, Alvernia finally broke through when Sydney Bradley found Lexi Hooper and Hooper was able to slide it into net to give Alvernia the 1-0 advantage.

Alvernia was able to keep WNE off the board for the rest of the second period as the Golden Wolves took the 1-0 advantage into the final period.

The Golden Wolves started the third period with an early power play, but were unable to build on their lead.

After being held off the board for over 50 minutes, the Golden Bears finally broke through with just over eight minutes remaining with a goal from Allison Walker to even it up at 1-1.

WNE outshot Alvernia 9-4 the rest of the period, but Alvernia was able to keep the Golden Bears off the board and send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Alvernia got off two shots in the opening 75 seconds but could not convert. Alvernia's third shot would be the charm when Hudec broke the 1-1 tie for the extra time 2-1 win after just 1:51 of the overtime period.

Beaven finished the afternoon with 37 saves in net for the Golden Wolves.

Alex Robertson led Alvernia on faceoff opportunities going 9-for-13. Both Hudec and Lauren Czymek finished with two blocked shots.

Alvernia returns to action on Friday and Saturday at Manhattanville.
