Overtime Goal Lifts Alvernia Over Cabrini

Reading, Pa (October 1, 2022) - Kathryn Palmer scored the game winning goal just a minute and thirty seconds into the overtime period to lift Alvernia University (7-3) over Cabrini University (7-3), 6-5, in non- conference field hockey action Saturday morning at Alvernia.

Alvernia scored right out of the gate when Brooke Spezialetti found Brianna Burkholder just under three minutes into the first quarter to give the Golden Wolves a 1-0 lead.

Cabrini would respond with a goal from Olivia Sims just two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.

Alvernia would take the lead when Burkholder scored her second goal of the contest with just over six minutes left in the quarter, to give Alvernia the 2-1 lead.

Cabrini evened the score just under three minutes into the second quarter when Caroline Gallagher scored to tie the game at two.

The Cavaliers took the lead shortly after when Grace Casper assisted Adrianna Jones to put Cabrini up 3-2.

Cabrini extended its lead to 4-2 after Alvernia committed a foul in the circle to award Cabrini a penalty stroke. Caroline Gallagher converted the penalty stroke to put Cabrini up two heading into halftime.

Alvernia responded right away in the third quarter with Burkholder netting her third goal of the contest, this one off of a penalty stroke to cut the lead to one just 44 seconds into the third.

The Golden Wolves would tie the game at four when Makenzie Smeigh scored an unassisted goal in the 40th minute.

The Cavaliers would take a 5-4 lead as time expired in the third quarter when Jones found Krista Geibler who found the back of the goal for Cabrini.

Cabrini's defense held strong through the fourth quarter before Spezialetti converted a penalty stroke to tie the game at five in the final minute of regulation to send the game to overtime.

The Golden Wolves wasted no time in the overtime period as Palmer found the back of the goal just one minute and 29 seconds into the period to push Alvernia past Cabrini 6-5.

Hannah Wolfe got the win in goal and tallied six saves.

The Golden Wolves were led by Burkholder with three goals on four shots. Spezialetti, Smeigh and Palmer all added goals for Alvernia.

Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday when they host Susquehanna at 7:00 PM.
