Golden Wolves Down Rival Lions, 3-1

Reading, Pa (Oct. 12, 2022) - Three different Golden Wolves scored to propel Alvernia University (10-4,4-1) to a 3-1 victory over crosstown rival Albright College (4-10,1-5) in MAC Commonwealth field hockey action Wednesday night at Albright.

The Golden Wolves struck early and took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of the first quarter. Alvernia inserted a corner that found its way to Brianna Burkholder who fired a pass to Abbie Buck. Buck then directed it past the Albright goalie and into the back of the goal.

Alvernia tallied another goal just before half when Hailey Miller fired a shot that was saved, the rebound fell to Makenzie Smeigh who fired it into the goal to give the Golden Wolves a 2-0 lead.

A scoreless third quarter was highlighted by Alvernia shots from Brooke Spezialetti and Kathryn Palmer, both of which were saved by Albright's Veronica Heckman. The Golden Wolves outshot the Lions 8-0 through the first three quarters.

The Lions pulled one back with just over 11 minutes left in the contest when Olivia Lorah found Chelsea Johnson to cut Alvernia's lead to 2-1.

The Golden Wolves responded almost immediately when Madison Speece won a penalty stroke for Alvernia, which sent Spezialetti to the spot. Spezialetti fired her shot into the top left corner of the net to beat Heckman and extend the Alvernia lead to 3-1.

The Golden Wolves defense did not allow another shot the rest of the night en route to the 3-1 win over rival Albright.

Lexi Boettcher picked up the win in goal for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves were led by Buck, Spezialetti and Smeigh who all had goals. Spezialetti finished with a team high two shots on goal.

Alvernia is back in action on Saturday when the Golden Wolves travel to #10 Messiah to take on the Falcons. Game time is set for 1:00 PM.
