Golden Wolves Shutout Spartans, 2-0

York, Pa (Oct. 15, 2022) - A late goal by Gabe Wunderlich propelled Alvernia University (9-2-4,3-1-1) to a 2-0 victory over York College of Pennsylvania (6-5-2,1-3) in MAC Commonwealth men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at York.

Alvernia broke the tie in the ninth minute of play when Ryan Cogill won a penalty which sent him to the spot. Cogill smashed his shot to the right and beat York keeper Brady Bixler to give the Golden Wolves an early 1-0 lead.

Justin Fetrow came close to making it 2-0 in the 25th minute after Gabe Wunderlich whipped a cross to Fetrow who flicked it on target but Bixler made the save to keep the score 1-0.

Alvernia keeper Evan Solley made a massive save with 15 minutes left in the half after Tyler Howlett ripped a shot toward the top right corner where Solley extended to deny Howlett.

The Spartans had a chance to equalize in the final seven minutes when Cole Kendra sent in a corner kick that found the head of Dermot Williamson who put it on frame but Solley kept it out to maintain the lead.

York's Mitchell Seipt fired a shot in the final two minutes of the half but Solley was there again to tally his third save of the half.

The Golden Wolves tallied four shots in the second half before Wunderlich scored a world class goal with just under three minutes left in the game. From midfield, Cogill attempted to play a pass to Evan Bauer that was cleared away by York's Bixler, the ball fell to Wunderlich, who saw Bixler out of his net and ripped a shot from 30 yards away and gave the Golden Wolves a two goal lead.

Solley got the win in net for Alvernia and finished with four saves. Solley tallied his eighth shutout of the season.
