Golden Wolves Drop Two at Cabrini Tri-Match

Radnor, Pa. (Oct. 22, 2022) - Alvernia University (9-13) dropped matches to Cabrini University (18-9) 3-1 and Marymount University (15-13) 3-0, in a non conference women's volleyball tri-match hosted by Cabrini Saturday afternoon. 

Alvernia opened the tri- match against Marymount University who jumped out to a 9-5 lead early in the first set. 

The Golden Wolves responded with four straight points thanks to a kill from Allie Evangelista and two kills from Juliana McGlone to tie the set at nine. 

The Golden Wolves and Saints traded points back and forth before Marymount took a 18-15 advantage. Alvernia responded by ripping off a 7-1 scoring run to take a 22-19 lead with Evangelista tallying two kills, Jamie Pierce added and Hailey McDevitt tallied a kill. 

The Saints ended the first set with a 6-1 run to take a 25-23 victory in the first set. 

Marymount got out to an early 3-0 in the second set before Alvernia battled back to make the score 5-3 with Rachel Sipling hammering home two kills for the Golden Wolves. 

The Saints followed with a five point run to extend their lead to seven with kills from Anna Anderson and Elissa Munsterman. 

Marymount extended its lead to 12-4 before Alvernia responded with a 5-1 run with McGlone adding a kill to cut the Saints lead to 13-9. The Golden Wolves ripped off another 5-1 scoring run to level the set at 16 thanks to two kills from Pierce, one from Sipling and Molly Gaffney tallied a kill as well. 

The Saints followed the Alvernia run with five straight points to take a 21-16 lead and then closed the second set with a 4-1 run to take the second set 25-18. 

Both teams traded points back and forth at the start of the third set with Marymount taking a 11-9 lead. Alvernia responded with a four point run and gave the Golden Wolves a 13-12 advantage. 

With Alvernia leading by one, Marymount ripped off a 6-1 run after errors by the Golden Wolves and two kills from Sophie Meredith to give the Saints a 18-14 lead. 

The Golden Wolves responded with a scoring run of their own, rattling off five straight points with two kills from McGlone and another by Evangelista. Abigail McGinley tallied an ace during the run as well as Alvernia regained the lead, 19-18. 

The Saints tallied three straight points after the Alvernia run to take a 21-19 lead, Alvernia pulled within one after a kill from Evangelista and a Saints service error. Marymount finished the third set with three points in a row to take the third set 25-21 and win the match 3-0. 

Alvernia was led by Sipling with ten kills and five digs, Evangelista tallied seven kills and Gaffney added 13 assists. Jordan Thompson led the Golden Wolves with 13 digs. 

The Golden Wolves faced off against Cabrini in the second match of the day and the Cavaliers took an 8-5 advantage early in the first set. 

Cabrini would then rattle off seven straight points to extend its lead to 15-5 with Sam Heenan tallying four kills during the run. 

Alvernia grabbed three points in a row after the Cabrini run but struggled to score points and the Cavaliers extended their lead to 21-10 late in the first set. 

The Golden Wolves tallied three more points after errors from Cabrini and a kill from Sipling to cut the deficit to eight before Cabrini scored the final four points of the set to take set one 25-14. 

The second set started with Cabrini and Alvernia trading points and were locked at eight before the Golden Wolves ripped off five straight points to take a 13-8 lead. Evangelista hammered home two kills while Sipling and Gaffney both tallied kills as well. 

Alvernia continued to add to its lead with Sipling adding two more kills and an ace to extend the lead to 17-12. Cabrini then went on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 18. 

The Golden Wolves continued to rattle off scoring runs with three points in a row thanks to kills from Thompson and Evangelista before Evangelista hammered home another kill, Alvernia led 22-19. 

Carbini pulled two points back but it was enough as Sipling hammered home the final three points for the Golden Wolves to take the second set 25-23 and tie the match at one game a piece. 

Alvernia got out to a 7-2 lead early in the third set after errors from the Cavaliers and kills from McGlone and Sipling. Cabrini responded and closed the gap with four straight points and tied the game at eight. 

With a 13-12 lead, Cabrini scored six points in a row thanks to two kills from Hannah Dalton and Heenan to increase its lead to 19-12. The Cavaliers finished the third set with a 6-2 scoring run with Dalton tallying the final point to win the set 25-16 and take a 2-1 lead. 

The fourth set began with Alvernia taking a 5-2 lead after Sipling hammered two kills home and Evangelista added another. 

Cabrini responded by scoring eight of the next nine points to swing the lead in its favor, 10-6 Cavaliers. They tallied three more points after kills from Heenan and Victoria Camacho to increase the lead to 14-8. 

Alvernia then went on to score five of the next seven points to cut the deficit to three with Cabrini still holding a 16-13 lead midway through the fourth set. Pierce tallied two kills for the Golden Wolves and Evangelista added another. 

The Golden Wolves and Cavaliers traded points back and forth with kills from Evangelista, McGlone and Sipling with the Cavaliers up 24-19. 

Down five, the Golden Wolves rattled off five straight points to tie the set at 24 after Pierce and Sipling both hammered two kills home during the rally. 

Cabrini's Dalton finished the fourth set with the final three points to take a 27-25 victory in the fourth set and take the match 3-1. 

The Golden Wolves were led by Sipling with 26 kills and ten digs, McGinley tallied a team high 21 digs and Gaffney led Alvernia with 27 assists. 

Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to crosstown rival Albright to take on the Lions at 7:00 PM.
