Golden Wolves Sweep Rival Lions

Reading, Pa (Oct. 25, 2022) - Alvernia University (10-3,2-5) swept crosstown rival Albright College (10-12, 0-7) 3-0 in MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball action Tuesday night at Albright. 

Alvernia opened up the first set by jumping out to a 9-0 lead with kills from Jiliana McGlone, Allie Evangelista, and two kills from Rachel Sipling. Evangelista also added a block during the scoring run. 

Albright worked its way back by scoring four straight points and ripping off a 7-3 scoring run to cut the Golden Wolves lead to 12-7. The Lions then rattled off another 7-3 run to pull within one of Alvernia, 15-14. 

The Golden Wolves then scored four of the next six points to extend their lead to 20-16 before the Lions responded with four straight points to tie it at 20 late in the first set. 

Alvernia fired back with back to back kills by McGlone and Sipling to force an Albright timeout with a 22-20 lead.The Golden Wolves then tallied the final three points of the set after two aces from Jamie Pierce to take set one 25-21. 

The Golden Wolves and the Lions traded points back and forth early in the second set. With the score tied at 11, Alvernia ripped off a 5-1 run to take a 16-12 lead and force a Lions timeout. Sipling hammered home two kills and Jordan Thompson added an ace. 

Alvernia continued to pad its lead by scoring five of the next seven points thanks to two aces and a kill from Gaffney to give the Golden Wolves a 21-14 advantage. 

Albright bounced back by going on a 6-3 run to cut the Alvernia lead to 24-20 before Presley Carnes tallied the final point of the second set and gave the Golden Wolves a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Wolves got out to another big lead early in the third set after tallying the first five points. Alvernia extended the lead to 13-3 with Sipling hammering home four kills, Emma Bowles and Pierce both added a kill as well. 

The Lions fought back to cut the Alvernia lead to 16-9 before the Golden Wolves rattled off four points in a row to take a 20-9 lead. Evangelista added a kill and Pierce tallied an ace. 

Albright rattled a 6-1 scoring run off to pull within six of the Golden Wolves late in the third set with Rachel Etim adding two kills. 

Alvernia capped off the final set with four straight points after two Kayleigh Kehler aces and a Sipling kill en route to a 25-15 win and a 3-0 sweep. 

The Golden Wolves were led by Sipling with 14 kills and a team high nine digs. Gaffney led Alvernia with 15 assists, Evangelista finished with five kills and Pierce tallied a team high four aces. 

Widener also defeated Lebanon Valley this evening in a 3-2 decision. With the win by the Pride, Alvernia has officially been eliminated from the MAC Commonwealth postseason.

Alvernia will close out its 2022 season on Thursday when the Golden Wolves host the York College Spartans at 7:00 PM.
