Alvernia Falls to Widener but Clinches Playoff Appearance

Chester, Pa. (Oct. 25, 2022) - Widener University (10-4-2, 5-0-1) scored three goals in 25 minutes to jump out to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-1 win over Alvernia University (10-3-5, 3-2-2) on Tuesday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's soccer action at Widener.

Even with the loss, due to other activity in the MAC Commonwealth tonight, Alvernia clinched a spot in the MAC Commonwealth postseason.

After a scoreless first half that saw Alvernia outshoot the Pride 7-3, Alvernia continued its pressure after the halftime break. Alvernia sent in three shots in the opening 12 minutes, including a shot by Matthew Kerr that went off the crossbar.

Widener then switched the field and scored its first of the game on a put-back goal by Sean Fatiga for the 1-0 lead in the 58th minute.

Alvernia had three equalizing opportunities in the next two minutes, but two shots were saved and the third went off the post.

The Pride then tacked onto their lead in the 68th minute on a goal by Michael Donaghy.

After Widener scored an insurance goal in the 83rd minute to make it 3-0, Alvernia got one back to make it 3-1 on a one-timer by Eli Klinger off the assist of Ryan Cogill in the 85th minute.

Alvernia did not have another shot opportunity as Widener came away with the 3-1 win.

Evan Solley finished with four saves in net for Alvernia.

Alvernia closes out the regular season on Saturday hosting Stevenson at 4:00 PM. A win over the Mustangs locks Alvernia in as the #3 seed.
