Reading, Pa. (Oct. 29, 2022) - Alvernia University (11-3-5, 4-2-2) defeated Stevenson University (5-9-5, 4-4-0) 2-0 in MAC Commonwealth men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Alvernia.
The victory capped off the end of the regular season for the Golden Wolves and secured the #3 seed in the MAC Commonwealth playoffs.
Alvernia struck early when Connor Kraycik found the back of the net just under seven minutes into the first half to give the Golden Wolves a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs responded by firing five shots in the next 20 minutes with Alvernia keeper Brendan Kerins saving three of the five Stevenson shots. Stevenson tallied one more shot on target but Kerins remained solid to send the Golden Wolves into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Alvernia started the second half by firing five shots in the first ten minutes with Kraycik and Eli Klinger both tallying two.
In the 64th minute of play Alvernia's Ryan Cogill was fouled in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Cogill stepped up to the spot and buried his shot into the left side of the net to give the Golden Wolves a 2-0 lead with just over 25 minutes left to play.
The Golden Wolves defense fended off two shots in the final 15 minutes of the contest to ensure the 2-0 shutout win.
Kerins picked up his first win of the season and tallied his first shutout with four saves.
The Golden Wolves were led by Cogill and Kraycik, both with goals. Klinger tallied a team high five shots with two of them being on goal, Kraycik added four total shots and Francisco Sandoval and Matt Knowles both added shots for Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves are back in action on Thursday evening when they travel to #2 Widener University for the semifinal game of the MAC Commonwealth playoffs.
