Late Goal Lifts #2 Widener Past Golden Wolves

Pride Score in 87th Minute to Secure a Spot in MAC Commonwealth Championship

Chester, Pa. (Nov. 3, 2022) - #2 WIdener University (11-5-2) scored a goal in the 87th minute to down #3 Alvernia University (11-4-5) 1-0 in the MAC Commonwealth semifinal men's soccer matchup at Widener on Thursday evening.

The first 45 minutes of play did not see much action for either side, with the Pride holding the slight advantage in possession and Alvernia keeper Evan Solley making two saves to keep Widener off the board. Alvernia fired off three shots in seven minutes early in the half, but Widener was able to keep the Golden Wolves at bay.

Alvernia came out of the half and swung the momentum in its favor, peppering Widener with shots most of the half. But, it was the Pride that broke through and broke the scoreless tie in the 87th minute. Andrew Hurnell took the ball up the far sideline, and, after being pressured by a Golden Wolves defender, Hurnell crossed the ball across the box. Bryan Gaviria was crashing into the box and was able to tap the ball inside the left post to break the tie and put the Pride on the board, 1-0, late in the 87th minute

Alvernia pressed in the final three minutes, with Solley coming up to play the field. Alvernia was unable to get a shot on net, though, as the Pride came away with the 1-0 win.

The Golden Wolves out-shot Widener 17-10 on the game, and 13-3 in the second half.

Solley finished the game with two saves, and Ryan Cogill and Eli Klinger finished with four shots each.

The Pride advance to the MAC Commonwealth Championship game against Messiah. Alvernia awaits an at-large bid to the NCAA or an ECAC appearance.
