Golden Wolves Advance to ECAC Semifinals on Penalty Kicks

Baltimore, Md. (Nov. 13, 2022) - Alvernia University (11-4-6) advanced to the ECAC semifinal after outshooting Goucher College (10-4-6) 4-3 in penalty kicks during the ECAC Men's Soccer quarterfinal match on Sunday afternoon at Goucher.

The Golden Wolves and Gophers played to a 2-2 draw after 110 minutes of action to send the game to penalty kicks. The Golden Wolves would come out on top after Austin Chambers converted his chance from the spot and Evan Solley stopped Goucher's final opportunity to advance Alvernia.

Alvernia opened up the scoring in the 24th minute when Nick Denlinger played a ball into Justin Fetrow. Fetrow caught the ball on a half volley and beat the Goucher keeper to give the Golden Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Wolves extended the lead to 2-0 right out of the gate in the second half. Just one minute and nine seconds into the half Eli Klinger found Connor Kraycik on the right side of the box. Craycik smashed his shot inside the far left post to beat Goucher's keeper and put Alvernia up two.

The Gophers pulled one back in the 86th minute when Yaya Diabagate found the back of the net off a Goucher free kick that was sent in to make it a 2-1 game late in the half.

Goucher leveled the score three minutes later when Ali Kazim Nakhid scored after a pass from Andres Aristimuno to tie the game at 2-2 with under two minutes left in regulation.

The game would go to overtime and saw the first ten minutes go scoreless with Alvernia tallying three shots with two of them coming off the foot of Denlinger. Goucher tallied two, both of which were off target.

The Gophers carded the only shots of the second overtime period with Aristimuno putting two shots on goal and Isaiah Perry added another, all of which were saved by Evan Solley.

The Golden Wolves and Gophers headed to penalty kicks to decide who would advance. Alvernia's Nick Willson and Francisco Sandoval converted the first and second chances for Alvernia as Goucher converted their first three. Travis Slear had his penalty saved by Ale Strenini to give the Gophers a 3-2 advantage heading into the final two penalties.

Denlinger converted his opportunity from the spot before Goucher missed their chance high, leveling the shootout at 3-3. Austin Chambers walked up to the spot and buried his shot to put the Golden Wolves up 4-3. Will Frasier took the final penalty shot for Goucher and was denied by Solley to send the Golden Wolves to the semifinal match.

Solley tallied five saves on seven shots on target for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves were led by Fetrow and Kraycik with the goals, and Denlinger and Klinger tallied assists. Kraycik led Alvernia with four shots.

Alvernia advances to the semifinal match and will take on PSU Behrend. Alvernia is the host of the semifinal and championship games of the 2022 ECAC Championship. Alvernia will take on PSU Behrend at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 19. Rutgers-Newark and NJCU will play later that day at 6:00 PM in the second semifinal.
