Reading, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2022) - Alvernia University (3-7-2, 1-2) was able to keep #2 Messiah University (10-0-2, 2-0) off the board for 76 minutes, but Messiah broke through and scored twice in the final 14 minutes to take a 2-0 win over Alvernia on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's soccer action at Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves played nearly the entire game defending their half of the field. Alvernia did not record a shot in the first half of the game, but Alvernia's defense held strong as the Golden Wolves defended 11 shots and Alvernia keeper Brynn Bock made four saves.Â
Alvernia's defense continued to hold strong for much of the second half, with Bock making four saves and Fontanta making a goal-line clear.Â
The Falcons finally were able to break through Alvernia's defense in the 76th minute when Julia Martin scored just inside the right post off a throw-in from Bella Touzeau.
Bock was peppered again over the next five minutes, and Messiah added to its lead on a goal by Brianna Seip off a deflected shot from Kayla Herr.
Alvernia had its one and only look in the 84th minute on an attempt by Haley Dougherty, but the shot sailed high.
Bock made a spectacular save in the 89th minute to keep Messiah from extending its lead, but the Falcons went on to take the 2-0 final.
Bock finished the night with 11 saves in net for Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves are back in action on Wednesday at Albright.Â
