Alvernia Falls to FDU Florham, 31-7, on Senior Day

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 12, 2022) - Alvernia University (3-7, 2-6) closed out its 2022 season with a 31-7 loss to FDU Florham on Saturday during senior day in MAC football action at Alvernia.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Devils put up 14 points in the second quarter to jump out to a 14-0 lead. FDU then outscored Alvernia 17-7 in the second half for the 31-7 win.

The Devils won the toss, but deferred until the second half. After the opening kickoff went through the end zone for a touchback, the Golden Wolves got to work on their own 25 yard line. Alvernia picked up a first down on a pass to Owen Morton from Monte McMorris, but ended up punting it away to the FDU 35.

The Devils were working their way down the field and about to enter the red zone when Tre'Von Potts picked off Ryon Thomas to end FDU's opening drive.

Alvernia's ensuing drive was kept alive on a roughing the kicker call, but Alvernia again had to punt it away on a 3-and-out. The Golden Wolves were given another chance again, this time on a muffed punt recovered by Jacob Montalto. Alvernia worked its way down into scoring territory, but were unable to convert a field goal attempt.

FDU's offense got into a rhythm in its next drive, working its way down the field and capping off the drive on a 34-yard pass from Thomas to Connor Perez to put FDU ahead, 7-0.

The Golden Wolves went 3-and-out on their next drive as FDU took back over on its own 34 yard line. The Devils needed just five plays to find the end zone as Thomas connected with Eric Castorina to put FDU up 14-0. That score would remain into the half.

The decision to defer the opening kickoff would turn out to pay off for the Devils as they took the opening drive of the second half right down the field and into the end zone on a six-play, 80 yard drive to go up 21-0.

Alvernia's first drive of the second half also resulted in the first score of the game for the Golden Wolves. Alvernia held onto the ball for over nine minutes as the offense worked its way 75 yards down the field. A 2-yard keeper by McMorris capped the drive off for Alvernia as the Golden Wolves got on the board to make it a 21-7 game with three minutes to go in the third quarter.

The Devils answered right back to once again make it a three score game Thomas found Perez for a 34 yard touchdown with 1:15 to play in the third.

Alvernia's offense could not get anything going in the final frame as the Devils tacked on a field goal to their lead for the 31-7 final.

McMorris finished 14-for-27 for 91 yards, and Stanton led the receivers with five receptions for 31 yards. Christian Lawton led Alvernia with ten tackles and a pass breakup.
