Alvernia Falls to Kean, 3-1 in ECAC Final

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 13, 2022) - Alvernia University (14-7) led 1-0 at halftime, but that was not enough as Kean University (15-4) scored three second half goals to take down Alvernia 3-1 in the ECAC Field Hockey Championship Sunday afternoon at Alvernia.

A scoreless first frame was highlighted by two shots off the stick of Alvernia's Felicia Getz and three straight corners by Kean as the Golden Wolves and the Cougars went into the second quarter tied at zero.

The Golden Wolves fired seven shots in the first five minutes of the second quarter with five of them being saved by Kean's Jenna Flemings. An additional shot by Rori Caulfied was saved by Morgan Stump.

The Cougars swung the momentum in their favor and rattled off five shots - including three on goal -  and five corners within the next five minutes with Alvernia's Lexi Boettcher saving three of the five Kean shots.

With just over three minutes left in the first half Alvernia's Madison Speece broke through down the right side, beating a Kean defender and drawing a penalty stroke which sent senior Brooke Spezialetti to the spot. The captain fired it into the top left corner of the net and gave the Golden Wolves a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Kean came out in the third quarter and leveled the score at one within the first two minutes. Jorja Hibschman found Morgan Stump who scored to tie the game at 1-1.

The Golden Wolves tallied shots by Kathryn Palmer and Abbie Buck, but both were saved by Flemings.

Kean took the lead with 20 seconds to go in the third quarter when Emma Killeen found the back of the net to put the Cougars up 2-1 heading into the final stanza.

Kean controlled the fourth quarter and tallied three shots before Ja'Carra Jackson scored with under two minutes to play to extend the lead to 3-1.

Lexi Boettcher finished with six saves in net for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves were led by Spezaletti with the lone goal. Alyssa Krady tallied a team high three shots, all of which were on target, and Caulfield, Getz, and Buck all tallied two for Alvernia.

Four Golden Wolves were selected to the ECAC All-Tournament Team for their performances. Hailey Miller was selected as a forward, Mackenzie Smeigh was selected as a midfielder and defenders Abbie Buck and Brooke Spezaletti rounded out the selections for Alvernia.

The game marked the conclusion of Alvernia's 2022 season. The Golden Wolves finished 14-7 overall and 6-2 in MAC Commonwealth play.
