Bears Push Past Golden Wolves, 57-53

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 15, 2022) - Alvernia University (1-3) led by six in the third quarter, but Ursinus College (2-1) was able to use a 22 point fourth quarter to take a 57-53 win over the Golden Wolves in non-conference women's basketball action at Alvernia.

The Bears led 22-19 at the half before Alvernia came out of the break and jumped out to a six point lead with four minutes left in the third quarter. The Bears then worked their way back and led by 12 with three minutes to play. Ursinus then held off a late Alvernia push to take the 57-53 win over the Golden Wolves.

Alvernia opened the scoring with a 3-pointer by Kayla Williams. After the Golden Wolves held the Bears scoreless for just over three minutes, Ursinus got on the board with a jumper by Alison Lisanti to make it a 3-2 game. Ursinus then took the lead on a layup before Alvernia answered with a Jordan Karmonick three to retake the lead, 6-4, with 5:30 to play in the first.

The Golden Wolves were held to just one point the remainder of the quarter while Ursinus added nine as the Bears took a 13-7 lead into the second frame.

Alvernia ended its field goal drought with a jumper by Cathryn Kramer to get Alvernia within four, 13-9. After a layup by the Bears with 7:18 to go in the quarter, Alvernia got back within three on another three by Karmonick, and then got within two on a free throw by Tamia Wessels

The Golden Wolves stayed within four points for much of the remainder of the quarter before tying it up at 19-19 on a Karmonick layup with just over a minute to play in the half. The final three points of the half came off of made free throws by the Bears as Ursinus took a 22-19 lead into the half.

The Bears opened the half with a layup before Alvernia hit its stride. Karmonick knocked down a 3-pointer to get Alvernia within one, and Tamia Wessels hit a three on Alvernia's next possession to give Alvernia the lead, 26-24, with seven minutes to go in the quarter. Ursinus tied it up on a layup before another Wessels' three gave Alvernia back the lead, 29-26 with 6:15 to go in the quarter.

A layup by Kramer off an offensive rebound gave Alvernia the five point lead, and, after an Ursinus layup, a Wessels' third three of the quarter gave Alvernia a six point lead, 34-28, with four minutes to go in the quarter.

After a timeout paused the game, Ursinus came out and converted a layup and and-one opportunity to get within three. The Bears held Alvernia scoreless the rest of the quarter while scoring one more layup of their own to take a 35-31 advantage over the Golden Wolves into the final ten minutes.

Back-to-back made free throws by Williams gave Alvernia back the lead, 36-35, to start the fourth quarter. The Bears and Golden Wolves then traded the lead before a 3-pointer by Ursinus' Natalie Mehl gave the Bears back the lead, 40-38.

Ursinus then went on a 13-3 run over the next four minutes to jump out to a 12 point lead, 53-41, with just over three minutes to go.

Two made free throws by Taliyah Malone and two more made free throws by Tyra Robinson got Alvernia back within single digits, 53-45, with just under three minutes remaining. The Golden Wolves continued to work the foul line and scored points off six more made free throws to work their way back to within four, 55-51, with 44 seconds to go.

Alvernia then called a timeout off a backcourt violation by Ursinus to advance the ball. Alvernia drew up a play for Williams', but her shot missed the target. Williams crashed the net and collected her own rebound and hit a put-back layup to get Alvernia within two, 55-53, with 23 seconds remaining.

Alvernia was forced to foul the Bears on their next possession, and Mehl made both of her opportunities to push the Ursinus lead back to four, 57-53. The Golden Wolves missed their final three jumpers as the Bears came away with the 57-53 win.

Karmonick led Alvernia's scoring efforts with 17 points and added nine rebounds and three steals. Wessels finished with 14 points, and Williams had a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds.
