Karmonick’s Late Free Throws Lifts Alvernia Over Immaculata, 49-48

Immaculata, Pa. (Nov. 19, 2022) - A pair of made free throws by Jordan Karmonick in the final two seconds was the difference maker as Alvernia University (2-3) defeated Immaculata University (3-2) 49-48 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action at Immaculata.

With Alvernia trailing by ten with about six minutes to play, the Golden Wolves went on a 16-5 run in the final minutes. The run was capped off with Karmonick grabbing an offensive rebound and being fouled on the way back up for a shot. She was sent to the line with Alvernia trailing by one and converted both shots from the stripe to tie the game and then give Alvernia the one point lead, and, ultimately, the one point win.

Immaculata led 6-2 early in the first quarter, but Alvernia tied it up at 6-6 with back-to-back layups by Kelly Fetter with 5:57 to go in the first. Both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes until the Mighty Macs broke the scoreless drought with a layup to take an 8-6 lead. Scoring remained slow through the rest of the first quarter as Immaculata took a 10-7 lead into the second frame.

A jumper by Kayla Williams opened the second quarter and brought Alvernia within one, 10-9. Two minutes later, Alvernia tied it at 13-13 on a jumper by Meghan Ruth, but Immaculata retook the lead on a layup with 6:32 to play. The Golden Wolves stayed within two possessions the rest of the half, but could not even it up again as Immaculata took a 26-22 lead into the half.

The Mighty Macs opened the second half scoring with a layup to take a six point lead, 28-22. Immaculata maintained that six point lead through much of the third quarter until a jumper by Nicole Etchison brought Alvernia within three, 35-32, with just under a minute to play in the third quarter. The Mighty Macs scored the final points of the quarter on made free throws to take a 37-32 lead into the final ten minutes.

Immaculata came into the final ten minutes looking to put the game out of reach and took its largest lead of the game, 43-33, with 6:20 to play.

Alvernia stayed in the fight, though, and a jumper by Ruth sparked the 16-5 run that would bring Alvernia into the lead. Ruth's jumper was followed by a layup by Williams and a 3-pointer by Karmonick to get Alvernia within one, Another layup by Williams brought Alvernia within one, 43-42. But, the Mighty Macs pushed back and extended their lead to four with a jumper and a free throw to make it a 46-42 with 2:46 to play.

A free throw by Tamia Wessels got Alvernia back within one possession, and a 3-pointer by Taliyah Malone evened the game up at 46-46 with 1:29 to play. Immaculata retook the lead, 48-46, again on a layup with a minute to play.

A block by Kayla Williams on an Immaculata jumper kept it a two point game. Cathryn Kramer was then fouled and sent to the line. Kramer made her first to make it a one point game, 48-47, but missed her second. Karmonick collected the board and was fouled under the basket with one second to play. She made her first to tie it at 48-48, and then converted her second to give Alvernia the 49-48 lead. The Mighty Macs did not have a solid opportunity to heave up a miracle as Alvernia took the 49-48 win.

Williams led Alvernia with ten points and four rebounds. Karmonick finished with nine points and seven rebounds.
