Quick Third Quarter Goals Power #2 York Past #3 Alvernia, 2-1

York, Pa. (Nov. 2, 2022) - #2/#13 York College (13-6) scored two goals in two minutes in the third quarter to swing past a first half lead by #3 Alvernia University (15-4) and down the Golden Wolves 2-1 in the MAC Commonwealth Field Hockey semifinal at York.

After an uneventful first frame that saw no shots and no corners, Alvernia swung some momentum in its favor after two yellow cards on York allowed the Golden Wolves to play 2-up just before the midway point of the second quarter. Following the cards, Alvernia worked its way downfield and Hailey Miller fired a shot that was saved by York goalie Belle Fields in the 25th minute. Miller collected her own rebound and lofted the ball into net to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.

Alvernia out-shot York 2-1 in the first half with Miller's two shots.

The Spartans came out of the half with fresh life and had an early second half opportunity with a corner just 18 seconds into the third quarter. While the shot attempt was blocked, York used the momentum to maintain steady possession early through the third quarter. In the 37th minute, York was able to draw a penalty stroke, and York's Lindsay Cowan subbed in to take the stroke. She buried the opportunity in the left corner to even things up at 1-1.

Just 1:59 later, York scored the go-ahead goal when Maycee Collison scored on her own rebound with 22 minutes to go to make it a 2-1 game.

York continued to maintain control through much of the rest of the game. While Alvernia was able to draw the ball into its offensive third in the final two minutes of the contest, Alvernia was unable to get a shot off or draw a corner. The Spartans held Alvernia to just its two first half shots as York came away with the 2-1 win.

Miller led Alvernia with two shots and the lone Alvernia goal.

The Spartans advance to take on #1 Messiah in the MAC Commonwealth Championship game on Saturday. Alvernia awaits a potential ECAC bid.
