Golden Wolves Down Albright 21-14 in Crosstown Rivalry

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 5, 2022) - Alvernia University (3-6, 2-5) scored 14 unanswered points to defeat Albright College (0-9, 0-7), 21-14, to pick up its third win of the season on Saturday afternoon in MAC football action at Albright.

The win marks Alvernia's third of the season and marks the winningest season in the program's four season history. It's also the first win for Alvernia over Albright as the teams move to 1-1 against each other.

The Golden Wolves won the toss and differed, kicking off to the Albright 27 yard line. The Lions, who had struggled offensively coming into Saturday, immediately got to work. The Lions picked up two first downs and moved into Alvernia territory later in the series. The Golden Wolves got a stop on 3rd and 2, but a facemask penalty on Alvernia gave the Lions 15 yards and a fresh set of downs. The Lions continued to work their way down the field and broke into the end zone on a three yard rush by Dahlir Adams to go up 7-0 after a successful PAT.

Alvernia took over on its own 42 yard line, but could not get anything going and punted away to end the quarter with Albright starting its second quarter at its own 31 yard line.

The Lions and Golden Wolves traded possessions until Alvernia took over on its own 14 yard line with 11 minutes left in the first half. Alvernia's Monte McMorris started the drive with a 21 yard keeper, and then completed a 27 yard pass to Joseph Perkins to move Alvernia into Albright territory. Facing a 3rd and 18, McMorris targeted Neeko Scurlock along the Albright sideline at the goal line. Scurlock was interfered with on the play, but was able to come back for the ball and snag it off the ground for an Alvernia touchdown. Brett Conrad converted the PAT to tie the game up with 8:20 left in the half.

The Lions and Golden Wolves traded possessions the rest of the half to take the game into the break at 7-7.

Alvernia was set to receive the opening kickoff of the second half, but the Golden Wolves muffed the return and gave the ball back to Albright with a short field. The Lions took advantage and needed just four plays to reach the back of the endzone and take the 14-7 lead.

The Golden Wolves responded and got to work on its own 36 yard line. McMorris rushed for three yards and then completed a pass to Joshua Smith for five yards to bring up a 3rd and 2. EJ Lee converted the first down on a five yard rush. He then broke off for a 51 yard rushing touchdown down the Alvernia sideline to even the game back up at 14-14 following Conrad's PAT.

Alvernia and Albright traded punts until the Golden Wolves took back over on the Albright 42 yard line with 3:40 to play in the third quarter. Alvernia picked up seven yards on three rushes to bring a 4th and 3 on the Albright 35. Kyle Stanton lined up behind center for a direct snap. Stanton faked a handoff to Ka'More Gill and then cut the opposite direction and ran 35 yards for an Alvernia touchdown. Conrad converted his third PAT of the afternoon to make it a 21-17 game with just over a quarter to play.

While the Golden Wolves could not get any more going on offense, the Alvernia defense shut Albright down in the fourth quarter. The Golden Wolves got the ball back with 3:09 to play in the game and were able to run the clock down. A first down rush for 17 yards by Lee sealed the win for Alvernia and allowed the clock to run down the rest of the way as Alvernia came away with the 21-14 win.

Lee rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown. McMorris passed for 131 yards and rushed for another 50 yards. Antonio Lazar led Alvernia's defense with nine tackles, including one for a loss. Delva Jean-Baptiste also recorded nine tackles on the afternoon.

Alvernia closes out its 2022 season next weekend at home with a MAC game against FDU Florham.
