Golden Wolves Power Past Mustangs, 64-40

Owings Mills, Md. (Dec. 3, 2022) - Alvernia University (6-3, 2-0) rolled to a 64-40 win over Stevenson University (2-4, 1-1) as the Golden Wolves picked up their fifth straight win on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action at Stevenson.

The 24 point victory is Alvernia's largest margin of victory over the Mustangs in the history of the two teams meeting. The win also marks Alvernia's first five-game win streak since the 2009-10 season when Alvernia won five straight between November 21 - January 2.

The Golden Wolves opened the scoring with two points from the line as Jordan Karmonick converted two free throws in the opening 30 seconds of action. The Mustangs evened it up at 2-2 on the ensuing possession.

After nearly two minutes of scoreless action, back-to-back layups by Kayla Williams and Cathryn Kramer extended Alvernia's lead to 6-2 with 6:54 to play in the first. The Mustangs responded with a layup of their own, but Alvernia went on a quick 7-0 run that was capped by a Karmonick three to push Alvernia's lead to 13-4 with 4:31 to play in the opening ten minutes.

The Mustangs ended their scoreless drought with back-to-back jumpers to get back within five, 13-8, with 2:41 remaining. The Golden Wolves and Mustangs traded baskets over the final 2:21 as Alvernia took a 15-11 lead into the second quarter.

Alvernia was held scoreless through the opening two and half minutes of the second quarter, and the Mustangs took advantage. Following two made free throws and a layup by Stevenson, the Mustangs evened the game up at 15-15 with 7:46 to play in the second half.

Kramer put Alvernia on the board in the second quarter with a jumper to put Alvernia back in front, and a 3-pointer by Karmonick made it a five point game, 20-15, in favor of the Golden Wolves with 7:12 to play in the quarter.

The Mustangs then hit back-to-back threes to take a 21-20 lead with 5:11 to play in the half. But, the Mustangs quickly went cold and Alvernia went on an 11-0 run to take its largest lead so far, 31-21, with 2:38 to play in the half. The run included five points from Williams and 3-pointers by Taliyah Malone and Tamia Wessels. The Mustangs called a timeout following the Wessels' three, and neither team scored for the remainder of the half as Alvernia took the 31-21 lead into the break.

Alvernia's offense struggled to score to open the third quarter, but Alvernia's defense held strong. The Golden Wolves allowed the Mustangs to get five back and get within five, 31-26, with 6:54 to play. A fastbreak layup by Wessels with 6:17 sparked Alvernia's offense to life and give Alvernia the seven point lead, 33-26, with 6:17.

The Mustangs and Golden Wolves traded points over the next three minutes until a jumper and converted an and-one free throw by Williams marked the start of a 12-5 run by the Golden Wolves. The run ended with back-to-back layups by Nicole Etchison and Wessels as Alvernia took the 48-34 lead into the final ten minutes.
Alvernia kept its foot on the gas to open the fourth quarter as a jumper by Williams and a Karmonick three off a Kramer steal gave Alvernia a 19 point advantage, 53-34, with just under nine minutes to play.

A 3-pointer by Malone gave Alvernia the 22 point lead with 6:33 to play, and Alvernia did not allow the Mustangs to get any closer than 20 the rest of the way. A jumper by the Mustangs with 3:50 to play marked their final points of the game as Alvernia scored four more off of jumpers from Williams and Etchison to seal the 64-40 win for Alvernia.

Williams recorded her third double-double of the season with an 18 point, 13 rebound game to lead Alvernia. She also had three blocks and four assists for Alvernia. Karmonick also reached double-digit scoring with 11 points, including nine points from beyond the arc. Kramer finished with eight points, nine boards, and four blocks.

Alvernia has the week off for finals and returns to action on Saturday as the Golden Wolves host Haverford in a break from MAC Commonwealth play.
