Annville, Pa. (Feb. 9, 2022) - Keon Taylor hit a turnaround jumper at the top of the paint with 1.4 seconds on the clock to seal an 84-82 win for Alvernia University (15-5, 9-4) over Lebanon Valley College (6-15, 3-11) on Wednesday night in men's basketball action at Lebanon Valley.
After both teams missed free throw opportunities to seal the game at the end of the first overtime period, the back-and-forth went to a second overtime period. The game stayed close in the second overtime, with three lead changes and three ties until Taylor put it away with his clutch jumper.
The game was close from the jump, with the back and forth starting on the opening possession with matching layups from Evan Timochenko for Lebanon Valley and Jakob Kelly for Alvernia.
Midway through the first half, the game was locked up at 18-18. Kelly carried the Golden Wolves early, accounting for 14 of Alvernia's first 18 points of the contest.
With three minutes left to go in the half, Lebanon Valley looked to be pulling away with a Collin Jones jumper to put Lebanon Valley up 28-22.
A jumper from Malik Green on Alvernia's next possession, cut it down to a four point game, 28-24, on its next possession.
Two made free throws by Green with 2:22 on the clock cut it to a two point game, 28-26. Alvernia did not get any closer the rest of the half as Lebanon Valley took a five point advantage into the half, 33-28.
A layup from Jones opened the second half scoring to put Lebanon Valley up 35-28. The Golden Wolves then went on a quick 7-0 run with a layup from Taylor tying the game up at 35-35 with 16:44 left in regulation.
Two minutes later, after giving the lead up, Alvernia retook it, 40-39. The Golden Wolves held Lebanon Valley to just one made free throw over the next three minutes while Alvernia built its lead up to 51-42. Taylor capped off the hot stretch for Alvernia with a stepback three with 8:43 left in the half.
The Dutchmen did not go down quietly and an Evan Smith 3-pointer was the first chip away at Alvernia's lead.
Lebanon Valley eventually retook the lead from Alvernia, 60-59, with 3:29 to play.
The two teams went back and forth, but Lebanon Valley held a 67-64 advantage with 14 seconds to play in the second half.
Green was then followed with nine seconds left on the clock and was sent to the line for a one-and-one opportunity. Green converted his first to make it 67-65, but then Green made the decision to intentionally miss his second, and it paid off. With the foul shot going off the backboard, Green quickly grabbed his rebound and tossed it to Avery Walker. Walker missed his layup opportunity, but Green was there for the game-tying, 67-67, put-back layup to send the game into overtime.
Mickeel Allen opened the second overtime period with two made free throws to put Alvernia up 69-67, but Lebanon Valley responded with a tying layup.
The back and forth continued throughout the five minutes, with neither team gaining any comfortable advantage.
Following a missed layup by Luis Garcia for the Dutchmen, Walker collected the defensive rebound and ran down the court. He was fouled while going in for a layup and sent to the line with .3 seconds on the clock. The gym got loud with Lebanon Valley fans making noise. The noise appeared to get to Walker as he missed both opportunities to put the game away. As Alvernia was going up for a rebound following the second missed free throw, the Golden Wolves were called for a questionable foul and Lebanon Valley was sent to the line with an opportunity to take the game.
Working in a now silent gym, Lebanon Valley could not convert its free throws either as the game was sent into its second overtime.
With Alvernia trailing Lebanon Valley 82-80 with just over a minute left in the second OT, Mickeel Allen tied it up at 82-82 with a driving layup.
Lebanon Valley then missed a jumper on its ensuing possession to give Alvernia a shot at a game-winner.
The shot clock was no longer a worry, so Taylor walked the ball down the court and Head Coach Mike Miller called a timeout to draw up a plan. Alvernia inbounded the ball and let the clock wind down. As time was expiring, Taylor stepped back out of the paint on the top left side, turned around, and knocked down the game-winning shot.
Taylor led all scorers with 29 points, going 6-for-10 from beyond the three point arc. Kelly and Green each recorded double-doubles. Both had ten rebounds, with Kelly adding 18 points and Green adding 16.
The Golden Wolves have a quick turnaround and host Valley Forge tomorrow night at 6 PM.
