Reading, Pa. (Feb. 19, 2022)- Rosemont College (1-1) used a strong fourth quarter to power past Alvernia University (0-1) 12-8 in a non-conference men's lacrosse matchup Saturday afternoon at Alvernia.
The Ravens struck first with a goal in the first six minutes of action, but Alvernia managed to draw the contest even 1-1, with
Ryan Gilman finding the back of the net off an assist from
Peter Capasso.
Alvernia kept pushing the pace, as with 3:37 left in the quarter Cade Campbell netted the go-ahead goal off an assist from Dylan Mercadante. The Golden Wolves ended the opening stanza on top of the Ravens, 2-1.
Despite the slim lead, the Ravens offense did not back down, as Mark Porter slipped a shot past Jared Devine to bring the match even 2-2, with 13:56 left in the second period. The Golden Wolves offense responded just minutes later, with
Kenneth Howley finding the back of the net, giving Alvernia a one-goal lead.
The Ravens responded with 4:56 left in the period, drawing the match even late in the second stanza. The second quarter ended with both teams drawn even, 3-3.
The second half was kicked off by Mercadante, as the First-Year recorded the go-ahead goal in the first 30 seconds of the half. The Ravens' offense bounced back, answering with a goal of their own five minutes later.
Mercadante boosted Alvernia's offense once again, tallying a man-down goal to give the Golden Wolves the lead with 6:54 left in the quarter. Both teams traded goals over the next six minutes, with Mercadante recording a hat-trick late in the quarter. The Golden Wolves went into the fourth quarter with a slim, 6-5 lead.
The Ravens offense opened the fourth quarter on a 3-0 run in the first six minutes of the quarter. Campbell and Keith Lake responded, over the next three minutes, drawing the match even 8-8.
Despite the strong offensive push, the Raven's offense proved to be too much. The Raven's closed out the contest on a 4-0 run, giving them the edge they needed to secure the victory. Rosemont ended the contest on top of Alvernia, 12-8.
Mercadante recorded a team-high three goals in his collegiate debut, along with two assists. Campbell racked up two goals, one assist, and one groundball. Devine ended the contest with 14 saves.
The Golden Wolves return to action Saturday as they match up against Mount St. Mary College at Alvernia.
