Reading, Pa. (Feb. 26, 2022)- Alvernia University (0-2) was dealt a loss from Mount Saint Mary College (1-0) 13-3 in a non-conference men's lacrosse matchup Saturday afternoon on the campus of Alvernia University.
Alvernia kicked off the scoring early in the contest, with
Cade Campbell slipping a shot past the keeper with 12:37 left in the opening stanza.
Despite the fast start for the Golden Wolves, the Knights recovered quickly. Mount Saint Mary's evened the match with a goal just over four minutes later. The Knights continued to apply pressure throughout the period, recording three more goals over the next seven minutes.
Mount Saint Mary ended the first quarter with the lead over Alvernia, 4-1.
The second quarter started back and forth, with both teams fighting to gain momentum. The Knights tested
Jared Devine, firing away nine shots in the first nine minutes of the second stanza. Mount Saint Mary finally slipped one past Devine to extend its lead with 5:09 remaining in the second quarter.
Mount Saint Mary grew its lead throughout the second quarter, tallying two more goals late. The Knights went into the half up 7-1 over the Golden Wolves.
The Knights were able to expand their lead early in the third quarter, pushing the lead to seven. Alvernia responded late in the stanza, with Campbell netting the man-up goal, making the score 8-2.
Mount Saint Mary closed out the quarter with a goal, pushing its lead back up to seven.
Ryan Gilman closed out the quarter with a late shot for the Golden Wolves, but the shot could not slip by the goalie. The Knights ended the quarter on top of Alvernia, 9-2.
Mount Saint Mary grew its lead in the fourth quarter, recording three goals in the first five minutes. The Golden Wolves responded midway through the quarter, with
Keith Lake tallying the unassisted goal.
The Knights continued to apply pressure, extending their lead by one more with 3:04 left in the fourth quarter. Mount Saint Mary ended the contest on top of the Golden Wolves, 13-3.
Devine tallied nine saves during the contest in his second start of the season. Campbell led the Golden Wolves with two goals, while Lake recorded one goal and one assist.
Alvernia returns to action Wednesday as they travel on the road to face Immaculata.
