Wyomissing, Pa. (Feb. 19, 2022)- Alvernia University (11-12-1, 9-9-1) capitalized on five power-play opportunities to defeat King's College (2-22, 2-18) 5-0 Saturday night in a women's ice hockey UCHC matchup at the Body Zone Complex.
The game started out slow, with both defenses flexing their muscles. The Golden Wolves' offense started to apply pressure, recording nine shots in just two minutes.
Alvernia's offense finally broke the tie late in the first period, taking advantage of a power-play opportunity.
Amber Steinhilpert netted the go-ahead goal with 40 seconds left in the opening stanza. The Golden Wolves ended the first period on top, 1-0.
The second period saw the Monarchs' offense stifled by the Golden Wolves' defense. As the period progressed, both teams traded shots, with neither team able to find the back of the net.
A penalty on the Monarchs late in the period allowed
Abby Reisinger to net the second goal of the contest, with 3:45 left in the second period. The Golden Wolves' defense closed out the period and took a 2-0 lead into the third period.
The Golden Wolves' offense kicked off the third period strong, with Reisinger tallying her second goal of the contest. Reisinger was assisted by Steinhilpert and
Olivia Gilida on the goal.
As the third period progressed, Alvernia continued to push, looking to extend its lead. That opportunity came off two back-to-back goals from
Sydney Bradley. Bradley was able to take advantage of two power-play opportunities, netting both goals seconds apart.
The Golden Wolves' defense held firm the rest of the way, coasting to their second straight win over King's. The contest ended with the final score of 5-0 in favor of Alvernia.

Alvernia awaits final seeding from the UCHC to determine its playoff position. The Golden Wolves currently sit at number seven in the rankings.
