Reading, Pa. (Feb. 22, 2022)- Alvernia University (6-4, 1-1) secured its first conference win of the season with a 3-1 win over Arcadia University (5-9, 2-1) Tuesday night in a men's volleyball MAC matchup at Alvernia.
The contest started fast, with both teams fighting a back-and-forth contest. Arcadia jumped out to a slim two-point lead, coming off a four-point run. The Golden Wolves didn't wait long to bounce back, as
Tyler Anderson helped kickstart a 4-0 run of their own, making the score 15-13.
The Knights jumped back in front as the set progressed, but the Golden Wolves did not stay down for long.
Nick Cummins racked up two huge kills late in the set, giving Alvernia a 22-21 lead.
The Golden Wolves ended the opening stanza on a 3-0 run, with Anderson collecting the final kill. Alvernia ended the first set on top of Arcadia, 25-22.
Ian Rauh kicked off the second set with a kill, leading the way for Alvernia's offense. Arcadia tested the Golden Wolves, though, tallying a 3-0 run partway through the second set, knotting the contest up at nine apiece.
Alvernia found a way to hold strong, going on an 8-4 run and taking a four-point lead. The Knights brought the contest back to within two. However, two strong kills from
Christian Mosley helped clean things up. The Golden Wolves ended the second stanza with a kill from
Brian Rea, securing the set 25-21.
Arcadia came out fast in the third set, jumping out to an early 8-3 lead. Two quick points from Mosely helped trim the five-point deficit. As the set progressed, Alvernia brought the contest to within one. The Knight's offense fended off a late set comeback from the Golden Wolves despite their effort. Arcadia claimed the third set, 25-20.
Both teams struggled to gain momentum to kick off the fourth set. The Knights took a slim one-point lead early on before Cummins secured two kills in a row, giving Alvernia a slight edge.
Halfway through the set is when Alvernia kicked it into high gear. With the game knotted at ten apiece, Rauh and Rea helped spark the Golden Wolves. Alvernia used an 11-5 run to jump out to a late six-point lead in the fourth set.
The Golden Wolves kept applying late pressure, with Anderson and Mosley securing four of the final five points in the set. Alvernia claimed the fourth set, 25-20, and the contest 3-1.
Anderson led all players on the evening, recording 17 kills, three digs, and three block assists. Cummins also had a big night, securing 12 kills while Mosley racked up 11 kills and three digs.
Ethyn Burczyk dished out 17 assists on the evening while
Brady Correll led the team with 30 to go along with four digs.
Alvernia returns to action Saturday as they travel to Misericordia to compete against Misericordia and NJCU.
