Reading, Pa. (Feb. 23, 2022)- Alvernia University (2-0) used five second-quarter goals to knock off DeSales University (0-1) 15-12 in a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup at Alvernia.
Alvernia pushed the pace early, testing the Bulldog's defense with three shots in the first three minutes. With 11:26 left to play in the opening stanza,
Haleigh Lackner opened the scoring, slipping a shot past the goalie and giving the Golden Wolves the lead.
DeSales did not stay down for long, evening the contest up in less than two minutes. The Bulldogs scored two more times over the next two minutes, taking a 3-1 lead with 7:30 left in the quarter.
The Golden Wolves' offense pushed back, with
Erika Whitmoyer recording a goal and cutting the deficit in half. DeSales netted another goal late in the quarter, but
Natalie Frantz took advantage of a free position shot and brought it back to within one. The Bulldogs ended the quarter with a goal, taking a 5-3 lead into the second quarter.
The second stanza was kicked off by DeSales slipping a shot into the net with 12:32 left in the quarter. Despite a strong effort from the Bulldogs, the Golden Wolves' offense fought back. Lackner recorded her second goal of the game to make the score 6-4 in favor of DeSales.
Alvernia took advantage of the momentum and kept on firing, with
Olivia McCambly,
Meagan Moky, and Lackner each picking up a goal in 1:38. The offensive explosion allowed Alvernia to take a slim one-point lead with 2:59 left in the stanza.
Alvernia managed to sneak one more shot in before halftime, with Whitmoyer using a free position goal. The Golden Wolves ended the quarter on a 5-0 run and went into the half with an 8-6 lead.
DeSales came out fighting in the third stanza, recording a goal in the first 79 seconds to bring the contest to within one. The Golden Wolves' bounced back though, with Frantz netting a shot with 10:55 left in the third quarter. Alvernia continued to grow its lead, with McCambly, Lackner, and
Mackenzie McKinney taking advantage of the Bulldog's defense.
This 4-0 run gave the Golden Wolves a five-point lead with 8:47 left in the third stanza. DeSales' offense managed to pick up two goals throughout the rest of the period, cutting the lead to three. The Golden Wolves closed out the third quarter with a score of, 12-9.
The Golden Wolves kicked off the fourth quarter with a quick goal by Frantz in the first 43 seconds. The Bulldogs responded minutes later before Lackner netted her fifth goal of the contest, pushing the lead back up to four with 10:52 left in the contest.
Alvernia continued to apply pressure, as Lackner secured her sixth goal of the contest while taking advantage of a free position shot. The Bulldogs offense tried to make a late-game comeback, netting two goals in the finals 3:30 of the contest, but to no avail.
The Golden Wolves finished the game on top of the Bulldogs, 15-12.
Lackner led the way for the Golden Wolves, netting six goals in seven shots on goal. Frantz also had a solid night, tallying three goals and two caused turnovers, while McCambly recorded two goals and one assist. Whitmoyer ended the night with a team-high three assists, as well as two goals.
Kasey Fox picked up her first of the year, recording 11 saves during the contest.
The Golden Wolves return to action Saturday on the road, at Susquehanna.
