Strong Second Half Lifts Susquehanna Over Alvernia, 24-9

Susquehanna, Pa. (Feb. 26, 2022) - A 10- goal third quarter powered Susquehanna University (2-1) to a 24-9 win over Alvernia University (2-1) on Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Susquehanna.

After leading early, Alvernia trailed by just three goals, 10-7, at the half. But the River Hawks outscored Alvernia 10-1 in the third quarter and 14-2 in the second half to come away with the 24-9 win.

Alvernia opened the scoring with a succesful free position goal by Haleigh Lackner just 40 seconds into the action to give Alvernia the 1-0 advantage.

Six minutes later, Alvernia's Olivia McCambly made it a 2-0 game in favor of the Golden Wolves with a successful free position goal of her own with 8:30 to play in the first quarter.

The Golden Wolves then extended their lead to 3-0 with Lackner recording her second free position goal of the afternoon just 20 seconds later.

The River Hawks got two back over the next two and a half minutes to make it a 3-2 game, but a goal from Natalie Frantz put Alvernia back up by two, 4-2, with 3:28 to play in the first.

Susquehanna then scored three goals in the final three minutes to tie it up and take the 5-4 lead into the second quarter.

Erika Whitmoyer opened the second quarter with a goal to even the game up at 5-5 with 13:30 left in the first half.

The game went scoreless for the next six minutes before the River Hawks retook the lead, 6-5, on a goal with 7:19 to play in quarter.

Alvernia again responded to tie it up at 6-6 with Whitmoyer finding Lackner on a man-up opportunity with 5:36 to go in the second.

Susquehanna then scored four straight to jump out to a 10-6 lead, but Whitmoyer scored the final goal of the half to cut Susquehanna lead to three, 10-7, going into the break.

The River Hawks came out of the half firing, scoring five goals in the opening six minutes to extend their lead to 8, 15-7.

A goal by Frantz with 7:47 left in the third stopped the five-goal run for the River Hawks and made it a 15-8 game, but Alvernia could not slow down the Susquehanna offense as the River Hawks added five more in the third quarter and took a 20-8 lead into the final frame.

Frantz netted her third of the afternoon to make it 20-9 in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but the River Hawks went on to score four unanswered to take the 24-9 win.

Both Lackner and Frantz finished with three goals each and Whitmoyer finished with two goals and two assists.

Alvernia returns to action on Wednesday night to host Goucher at 6:00 PM.
