Whitmoyer Scores 100th Career Goal, Alvernia Rolls by Goucher, 21-6

Whitmoyer Also Breaks Single-Game Assist Record in Career Night for Alvernia

Reading, Pa. (March 2, 2022) - Senior Erika Whitmoyer scored her 100th career goal and broke the single-game assist record to lead Alvernia University (3-1) to a 21-6 win over Goucher College (0-3) on Wednesday night in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.

Whitmoyer scored six goals on the night, but her 100th career goal came from her fourth goal of the evening in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Whitmoyer reached the achievement in just 39 games after her 2020 season was limited to just five games due to COVID-19 and Alvernia played an abbreviated season of 14 games in 2021. After tonight, Whitmoyer stands at 102 career-goals and is just outside the top-ten all-time. Sarah George, a 2012 graduate, sits atop the list with 216 goals all-time.

Whitmoyer also scored six assists on the night, four of them on the connection with Natalie Frantz, to break Alvernia's single-game assist record. The previous record was five in a game - set three times by Whitmoyer in the 2020 season, and set twice by Alison Bainbridge in the 2010 season.

The Golden Wolves opened the scoring with three goals in the opening two and a half minutes of action and never looked back. Olivia McCambly, Whitmoyer, and Frantz all found the back of the net in the opening minutes, with Whitmoyer assisting on the McCambly and Frantz goals.

Goucher got two back with back-to-back goals from Julia Gazzola to bring Goucher within one, 3-2, with 6:16 remaining in the first quarter.

Frantz then rattled off three straight goals, including two in 17 seconds, to put Alvernia up by four, 6-2, with 2:40 to play in the first. Again, Whitmoyer assisted on Frantz's first two of the quick run, and Haleigh Lackner lent a hand on the third.

Goucher scored the final goal of the opening quarter to make it 6-3 going into the second.

Whitmoyer opened the second quarter with her second of the night, but Goucher answered about a minute later to make it a 7-4 game in favor of Alvernia with just under 12 minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Lackner then scored a man-up goal with 9:44 to play in the second, but Goucher again responded a minute later to stay within four, 8-4, with 8:44 to play.

A full-field breakaway goal from Meagan Moky with 5:50 to play in the second then gave Alvernia the 9-5 advantage. Moky picked up a ground ball by her own goal before clearing the ball and taking it coast-to-coast for her third goal of the season. Moky's goal ignited an 8-0 run by Alvernia that spanned the final minutes of the second quarter and the first half of the third quarter and gave Alvernia a 16-5 advantage.

The 8-0 run included two goals from Lackner, Whitmoyer's 99th and 100th career goals, a man-up goal from Mackenzie McKinney and Frantz's fifth of the night.

Goucher's Emily Flinn stopped Alvernia's run and scored what would be Goucher's only goal of the second half to bring the Gopher's within ten, 16-6, with 2:33 to play in the third.

Alvernia did not allow Goucher to get any closer as Whitmoyer netted two more goals to close the third quarter and open the fourth. McCambly recorded her third of the night with 5:25 to play to make it 16-9, and Hailey Miller's first career goal made it a 20-6 game with 3:21 to play. McCambly then capped things off with the final goal - a free position shot- of the night to make it 21-6 with 1:49 to play.

Whitmoyer led Alvernia with her six-goal, six-assist performance and Frantz recorded a career-high five goals. McCambly also netted a career-high four goals.

Kasey Fox picked up the win in net with 11 saves.

Alvernia has a quick turnaround and will face Marywood University on Friday at home at 4:00 PM.
