Reading, Pa. (Mar. 4, 2022) - An 8-0 run by Alvernia University (4-1) to close out the first quarter propelled the Golden Wolves to a 21-9 win over Marywood University (3-1) on Friday evening in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves and Pacers were tied at 2-2 after five minutes of action, but Alvernia closed out the first quarter on an 8-0 run to jump out to a 10-2 lead. The Golden Wolves led the rest of the way, never letting the Pacers within six.
Erika Whitmoyer picked up right where she left off on Wednesday, scoring the opening goal just 50 seconds into the contest off an assist from
Haleigh Lackner.
The Pacers tied it up about 90 seconds later, but Alvernia went back in front, 2-1, off a goal by
Olivia McCambly with 12:07 remaining in the first quarter.
About two minutes later, Marywood again tied it up off of a successful free position goal.
McCambly again broke the tie, this time off a Whitmoyer assist, to put Alvernia up 3-2 and spark Alvernia's 8-0 run.
The run included two more goals from McCambly, two goals from Lackner, and goals from
Sophia Ruocco,
Mackenzie McKinney, and
Meagan Moky as Alvernia took the 10-2 advantage into the second quarter.
The Pacers opened the quarter with two goals in 70 seconds, including one man-up goal, to get within six, 10-4.
Whitmoyer then scored two back-to-back goals to push Alvernia's lead back to eight, 12-4, with 8:41 to play in the first half.
Both teams then went scoreless for the next four minutes until Alvernia's
Sherrin Smith broke the drought with her first career goal on a man-down shot to put Alvernia up 13-4 with 4:38 to play in the second quarter.
Taylor Sundstrom then put Alvernia up by ten, 14-4, with just under two minutes to play in the half. Neither team scored in the final two minutes as Alvernia took the ten goal lead into the break.
Marywood scored three straight goals to open the second half and get within seven, 14-7, with 6:26 to play in the third.
Goals from Moky and Whitmoyer in a minute span put Alvernia back up by nine, 16-7, with 5:05 left in the third.
The Pacers scored the final goal of the quarter, but Ruocco opened the fourth with her second of the evening to put Alvernia up by nine, 17-8.
Whitmoyer's fifth of the afternoon put Alvernia back up by ten and activated the running clock for good with 12:52 to play.
Additional goals from Whitmoyer, McCambly, and
Natalie Frantz pushed Alvernia's lead to 21-8.
The Pacers scored the final goal of the contest as Alvernia came away with the 21-9 win - it's second 21-goal win in a row.
Whitmoyer led the way for Alvernia with six goals and three assists. McCambly finished with five goals and Lackner, Moky, and Ruocco each had two goals.
Kasey Fox picked up her third win of the season with three saves in net for the Golden Wolves.
Alvernia returns to action on Tuesday at Stevens.
