Ft. Myers, FL. (Mar 6, 2022)- The University of Pittsburgh-Bradford (3-4) used a five-run fourth inning to defeat Alvernia University (4-7-1) 6-2 on Thursday morning in a non-conference baseball matchup in Fort Myers, Florida.
The contest started slowly as both teams struggled to get on base. The Golden Wolves left two runners stranded during the first two and a half innings of the contest. The Panthers finally broke the tie in the bottom of the third, taking a slim 1-0 lead.
Alvernia responded quickly to Pittsburgh, with
Nick Nutile and
Thomas Faggioni getting on base. Nutile evened the contest up, crossing home plate on a throwing error. The next run came off the bat of
Lucas Floyd, who singled to right field, driving in Faggioni to give the Golden Wolves a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
The Panthers did not stay down for long, using an offensive explosion in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. As the game progressed, Alvernia fought desperately to get back on top. Over the next three innings, the Golden Wolves managed to get three runners on base, with Nutile getting a prime scoring opportunity, advancing to third base. Despite the effort, the Panthers held the Golden Wolves' offense at bay.
Alvernia managed to get two runners on base in the top of the eighth, with Nutile on third and
Jason Kelly on first. However, the opportunity would not result in any runs, as the Golden Wolves left the two runners stranded.
The Panthers kept up the pressure into the inning, stifling any chance of an Alvernia comeback. Pittsburgh claimed the contest, downing Alvernia with a 6-2 win.
Nutile led the Golden Wolves with two hits in three at-bats during the contest.
The Golden Wolves return to action tomorrow as they face off against Bluffton University for their final game in Florida.
