Williamsport, Pa. (March 16, 2022) - Alvernia University (0-5) lost a close contest against Penn College (3-4) 13-10 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference men's lacrosse matchup at Penn.
The Golden Wolves started the contest hot, with
Louis Ferrara kicking off the contest with an unassisted goal in the first 24 seconds. Ferrara did not stop there, as he netted a second goal less than a minute later off an assist from
Keith Lake to take a 2-1 lead with 13:43 left in the opening stanza.
The Wildcats answered quickly, cutting the deficit in half. The Golden Wolves rallied quickly, with
Sean Goldsmith making it a two-goal game once again off an assist from
Dylan Mercadante. Penn chipped away at the Alvernia lead, drawing the contest even 3-3 with 8:39 left in the opening stanza.
Lake gave the Golden Wolves the lead with 4:41 left in the opening quarter, with Colin McFayden dishing out the assist.
Cade Campbell extended the Golden Wolves lead late in the quarter, with Ferrara recording the assist to make it a 5-3 game with 52 seconds left in the first quarter. Alvernia ended the opening stanza on top. 5-3.
Penn opened the scoring in the second quarter, making it a one-goal game early in the stanza. McFayden responded a minute later, with Lake recording his second assist of the contest. The Wildcats answered midway through the quarter, making it a 6-5 game with 8:20 left to play.
The offensive pace slowed down through the second, with Mercadante breaking the dry spell with 16 seconds left in the first half. Alvernia ended the half with the lead over Penn, 7-5.
Campbell kicked off the second half with an early goal, giving the Golden Wolves a three-goal lead in the first 20 seconds. Alvernia's defense played well in the third, minimizing shots before the Golden Wolves' offense slipped another shot past the goalie, this one from Goldsmith. Penn managed to find the back of the net late in the third stanza, making it a 9-6 game going into the fourth quarter.
Penn opened the fourth quarter fast, recording four goals in the first three minutes to take a one-score lead. The Wildcats grew their lead throughout the quarter, taking a 13-9 lead with 1:01 left in the contest. The Golden Wolves kept fighting, with Goldsmith tallying a late goal off an assist from Lake. Despite the effort, Alvernia fell to Penn 13-10.
Goldsmith led the Golden Wolves with three goals, while Lake recorded three assists and one goal during the contest.
Alvernia returns to action at home on Saturday as they faceoff against McDaniel College
