Stevenson, Md. (March 16, 2022)- Alvernia University (9-7, 4-3) dropped its contest against Stevenson University (15-6, 6-0) 3-0 in a MAC men's volleyball matchup Wednesday night at Stevenson.
The Golden Wolves kicked off the first set with a 3-1 run, with
Shane McNicholas recording two kills during the brief burst. The Mustangs quickly answered, rebounding and jumping out to a 9-6 lead. Alvernia fought back and made it a 9-10 contest, with
Tyler Anderson sparking the Golden Wolves' offense.
Stevenson's high-powered offense quickly regained momentum, going on a 9-2 run and taking a 19-11 lead. The Golden Wolves attempted to climb back, with Briana Rea and
Christian Mosley recording kills. However, the Mustangs proved to be too much in the opening stanza, claiming the set 25-17.
The Golden Wolves' offense opened the second set on a 6-3 run, which was led by Rea and Mosley picking up kills. Alvernia continued to battle, holding a 13-9 run midway through the second stanza. Despite the deficit, the Mustang's offense responded, going on a 4-0 run to draw the contest even at 13 apiece.
The rest of the set was back and forth, with neither team able to gain a firm grip on the contest.
Brady Correll and Rea were key contributors in the close set, helping guide the Golden Wolves' offense. The Mustang's offense overcame Alvernia's push, using a 5-2 run to claim the set, 25-22.
The third set saw Stevenson open on a 5-1 run before Anderson helped bring the contest to within two with a pair of kills. The Mustang's offense kept up the pressure, using a 7-1 run to make it a 14-6 contest. Stevenson gave Alvernia a chance to get back into the contest, using a late 8-1 run to take a 24-10 lead. Rea and
Aidan Wunderly attempted to lead Alvernia to come back but were unable to take down Stevenson. The Mustangs claimed the third set 25-13 and the contest 3-0.
Anderson led the Golden Wolves with six kills, with Rea and Mosley tallying five kills each.
Ethyn Burczyk and Correll both recorded 12 assists apiece.
The Golden Wolves return to action Saturday as they host their final tri-match of the season
