BOX SCORE 2 Reading, Pa. (March 19, 2022) - Alvernia University (10-8, 4-4) dropped a MAC match to Messiah University (13-3, 6-0), 3-1, before picking up a 3-0 non-conference win over Drew University (7-14) on Saturday afternoon in men's volleyball action at Alvernia.
After taking the first set, 25-22, to take a 1-0 lead over Messiah, the visiting Falcons took the final three sets for the 3-1 win over Alvernia. Alvernia then led wire-to-wire in a 3-0 win over Drew University.
Back-to-back kills from Nick Cummins opened the first set for Alvernia to give the Golden Wolves an early 2-0 lead. A kill by Aidan Wunderly later in the set gave Alvernia a 7-3 advantage, but the Falcons went on a 5-2 run to get within one, 9-8. The Falcons then tied it up at 10-10 on a block.
The Falcons and Golden Wolves traded points until a kill from Christian Mosley gave Alvernia a late 22-19 advantage, and a block from Brady Correll and Brian Rea made it 23-19. An attack error by the Falcons gave Alvernia the 24-19 advantage, but the Falcons held off set point three times to make it a 24-22 game.
Cummins finished the set just as he started it, with a kill, to seal the 25-22 first set win for the Golden Wolves.
Just like the first set, Alvernia jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage and held a lead until Messiah tied it up at 6-6 off a kill by Ryan Givens.
Alvernia retook the lead, 8-6, off of back-to-back kills from Brian Rea and Brady Correll, but three straight points from the Falcons gave them back a 9-8 lead.
The Falcons and Golden Wolves traded or tied the lead eight times until a kill by Nate Bowman gave Messiah a 14-13 advantage and the lead for good. Messiah took the second set, 25-22.
In the third set, Messiah led 4-2 early on, but a block from Rea and Mosley evened it up at 5-5.
Alvernia then took the lead, 7-6, on a Messiah attack error, but the Falcons then went on a 9-1 run to take a 15-8 advantage.
The Falcons kept their foot on the gas the rest of the set, taking a 25-18 set three win to take a 2-1 advantage on the match.
After Messiah took an early 2-0 lead in set four, the Golden Wolves took advantage of four errors by the Falcons, as well as a kill from Mosley, to take a 5-3 lead early.
The Falcons then evened it back up at 6-6 on an Alvernia service error, but a kill from Tyler Anderson and a Mosley service ace gave Alvernia the 8-6 advantage.
The Falcons then rattled off a 7-1 one run to take an 13-9 lead, but Alvernia responded right back.
A kill from Alvernia's Shane McNicholas sparked a 4-0 run for the Golden Wolves, which also included two kills from Anderson, to even the game up at 13-13.
Alvernia held a 17-16 advantage late, but a 6-0 run for the Falcons propelled them to a late 23-17 lead.
A kill from Anderson and Mosley service ace brought Alvernia within four, 23-19, but Messiah held Alvernia off the rest of the way to secure the 25-20 set win and 3-1 match win.
Anderson finished the match with 11 kills off of 29 attacks, and Cummins finished with nine kills off of 24 attacks. Jonny Ortega finished with 11 digs and Correll finished with 25 set assists.
In Alvernia's second match of the day, the Rangers and Golden Wolves traded points early on in set one.
With Alvernia leading 12-7 later in the set, the Golden Wolves went on a 6-2 run to double-up on the Rangers, 18-9.
With Alvernia now leading by eight later in the set, 22-14, back-to-back kills by Cummins off of Correll assists put Alvernia at set point, 24-14.
The Rangers held off the set for two points until a service error by Drew gave Alvernia the 25-16 opening-set win.
In set two, Alvernia pushed the Rangers early with a 3-0 lead. The Rangers then trailed Alvernia by three, 9-6, later in the set but Alvernia was able to push its lead to 13-7 with four errors by the Rangers and a kill from Tyler Gray.
With Alvernia in solid control, 24-12, Ian Rauh sealed the set with a kill from a Correll assist for the 25-13 set win.
In set three, the Golden Wolves kept things rolling with an early 9-4 lead over the Rangers.
After the Rangers got within two, 9-7, Alvernia went on a 5-1 run that included kills from four different Golden Wolves to extend the lead to six, 14-8.
An Aidan Wunderly service ace later in the set gave Alvernia its largest lead of the set, 21-14. Cummins finished off the set and match for Alvernia with a kill for the 25-18 set win and 3-0 match win.
Wunderly led Alvernia in match two with 10 kills off of 22 attacks. Correll finished with 17 assists and Burczyk added 16 of his own.
Alvernia returns to action on Tuesday with a MAC matchup against Widener.
