Mustangs Down Golden Wolves, 3-0

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 2, 2022)- Alvernia University (7-6, 2-2) fell 3-0 to Stevenson University (10-6, 2-0) at Alvernia in a MAC men's volleyball matchup Wednesday night.

The Golden Wolves started the game strong, taking a quick 3-1 lead early in the first set. The Mustangs quickly responded, using a 4-0 run midway through the opening stanza to take a 13-9 lead.

Despite the deficit, Alvernia continued to battle, using a service ace from Brian Rea and a kill from Brady Correll late in the first set to cut the Mustangs' lead to two. Stevenson tallied one quick point in response, making the score 23-20 before Nick Cummins picked up a kill to bring the score back to within two.

The Mustangs continued to apply pressure as they recorded the final two kills and claimed the first set, 25-21.

Stevenson kicked off the second set with a quick 6-2 run. Tyler Anderson and Aiden Wunderly helped spark the Golden Wolves' offense, with each tallying a kill and helping draw the match even at nine apiece halfway through the set.

The match continued to go back and forth before the Mustangs used a 5-1 run to take a four-point lead. Cummins and the Golden Wolves attempted to battle back late but to no avail. Stevenson ended the second stanza on top of Alvernia, 25-20.

The third opened with both teams knotted firmly, 6-6. The Mustangs once again capitalized on a 5-1 run to jump out in front of Alvernia. Despite Anderson and Cummins both picking up kills, the Mustangs' offense proved to be too much.

Caleb Whitehead and the Golden Wolves went on a quick 3-1 late in the third stanza, bringing the score to 24-18. Stevenson's ended the third set one point later, claiming the third set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

Cummins led the Golden Wolves with 11 kills, five digs, and a block assist. Anderson tallied eight kills and two digs, while Ethyn Burczyk ended the contest with 21 assists.

The Golden Wolves return to action Saturday as they match up against King's College at Alvernia.
