Reading, Pa. (March 21, 2022) - Kean University (14-4) scored in eight of the nine innings as the Cougars defeated Alvernia University (6-10-1) 16-5 on Monday evening in non-conference baseball action at Alvernia's Angelica Park.
Kean opened the game with a run in the top of the first, but Alvernia evened it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the opening frame with
Joe Ginder scoring during an error on
Brandon Smith's at-bat.
The Cougars then added four over the next two innings to go up 5-1, but Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the fourth on a
Kyler Newton triple that brought in Smith.
The Cougars kept rolling, though, doubling their lead over the next two innings to go up 10-2 on the Golden Wolves.
Alvernia got two back in the bottom of the sixth with Brown and Newton driving in runs, but Kean responded with two runs in the top of the seventh to stay up eight, 12-4.
Alvernia's last run of the game came on an
Ethan Brown sac fly that brought in
Grant Hackett, but Kean added four more over the final two innings for the 16-5 final.
Smith led Alvernia with two hits, and Newton led with two RBIs.
The Golden Wolves are back in action tomorrow at Rutgers-Camden.
