Offensive Explosion Powers Golden Wolves Past Cairn, 16-2

Langhorne, Pa. (Mar. 23, 2022)- Alvernia University (1-6) used 16 goals to secure a 16-2 win over Cairn University (0-4) Wednesday night in a non-conference men's lacrosse matchup at Cairn.

The opening stanza started slow, with both teams trying to gain some ground early. Alvernia's offense broke through with 11:56 left in the quarter, as Sean Goldsmith recorded a man-down goal to jump ahead of the Highlanders, 1-0.

The Golden Wolves pressed their advantage, with Louis Ferrara scoring just 23 seconds later to make it a two-goal game. The scoring barrage kept coming, as this time Kenneth Howley found the back of the net off an assist from Ryan Gilman just 45 seconds later.

Alvernia continued to grow its lead in the quarter, with Colin McFayden and Goldsmith leading the charge, helping the Golden Wolves take a 5-0 lead with 5:22 left in the opening stanza. Alvernia ended the first quarter in control of the contest with a 5-0 lead.

The second stanza saw Alvernia continuing to dominate, with McFayden growing the Golden Wolves lead off an assist from Goldsmith. Gilman kept the momentum going as minutes later he recorded a goal to make a 7-0 game. Alvernia continued to apply pressure, with Howley slipping a shot past the goalie.

Cairn got on the board late in the quarter, breaking past the Golden Wolves' defense with 3:31 left in the stanza. The Golden Wolves closed out the quarter strong, holding the Highlanders in check and taking an 8-1 lead into halftime.

The third stanza started slow, with both teams struggling to gain momentum. Cairn broke the stalemate, tallying a goal with 9:58 left in the quarter and cutting the deficit to six. The Golden Wolves responded halfway through the quarter, with Cade Campbell recording his first goal of the contest and making the score 9-2.

Alvernia continued to push the Highlanders, despite the strong lead, as McFayden, Campbell, and Goldsmith all recorded goals over the next five minutes. The strong third quarter gave the Golden Wolves a 12-2 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Golden Wolves' offense kept firing to open the fourth quarter, as Gilman and Campbell tallied two goals in the first 1:14 of the stanza to make it a 12 point lead. Throughout the fourth quarter, the Golden Wolves added two insurance goals, as Campbell and Peter Capasso both found the back of the net. Alvernia ended the contest on top of Cairn, 16-2.

Campbell led the Golden Wolves with four goals and two assists, while Goldsmith and McFayden each recorded three goals. Goldsmith also added three assists. First-Year Dane Sabarese ended the contest with eight saves.

The Golden Wolves return to action Saturday as they travel to Farmingdale, N.Y. to take on Farmingdale State.
