Alvernia Drops Two to Haverford

Reading, Pa. (March 26, 2022) - Alvernia University (6-13-1) was held to just one run over two games as Haverford College (8-10) swept the Golden Wolves on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference baseball doubleheader at Alvernia.

The Fords shut out Alvernia in game one, 6-0, before taking game two by a 3-1 decision.

In game one of the afternoon, Haverford opened the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first, and made it a 2-0 game in the top of the second with a runner scoring on a wild pitch.

Alvernia had a chance to get on the board in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded and two outs. But, Haverford forced a fielder's choice with the play at third to end the threat.

Haverford added on to its lead in the top of the fifth with a double to right center to drive in one and put the Fords up 3-0. They then doubled up on their lead in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits to go up 6-0.

Alvernia had one base runner over the final two innings as the Fords came away with the 6-0 shutout.

Jake Reese struck out six and allowed six hits in the start, and Brandon Smith led the Golden Wolves with two hits.

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia struck first with Nick Nutile driving in Christian McElroy on a single to center in the bottom of the third.

Alvernia's 1-0 lead lasted until the top of the fifth, when Haverford evened it up on a double to right center that drove in a runner on first and evened it up at 1-1.

Haverford nearly went up 2-1 on Alvernia in the top of sixth with a Ford runner on third. That runner tried to score on a sacrifice fly, but was called for leaving early to keep the game at 1-1.

Haverford broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh with runs scoring on two different singles to left field to give Haverford the 3-1 lead.

Alvernia's best opportunity to get runs back came with a bases loaded opportunity in the bottom of the eighth. But, Haverford pitcher Josh Fuller ended the threat, striking out Jake Kelly on three pitches.

The Golden Wolves again had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth with one out, but Haverford struck out Alvernia's final two batters.

Jack Cossa got the start for Alvernia in game two, striking out three and giving up five hits. Nick Nutile led Alvernia's offense with two hits.

Alvernia returns to action on Tuesday to host Albright College in the MAC Commonwealth opener.
