Alvernia Opens MAC Commonwealth Play in Dominant Fashion over Albright, 25-9

Reading, Pa. (March 29, 2022) - Alvernia University (7-13-1, 1-0) opened MAC Commonwealth play with an offensive showcase, defeating Albright College (1-17, 0-1) 25-9 on Tuesday afternoon in conference baseball action at Alvernia.

The Lions jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, but, Alvernia put up a six spot in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 7-5 advantage and never looked back. Alvernia outscored Albright 18-4 the rest of the way with the Golden Wolves scoring 25 total runs on 17 hits.

Albright came out fast, taking an early 4-0 lead on five hits, including a two-run homer to left field. 

Alvernia got on the board in the bottom half of the opening frame, with Brandon Smith driving in Zach Rogacki to make it a 4-1 game.

After Albright added one to its lead in the top of the second to make it 5-1, Alvernia's offense came alive in the bottom of the second. The Golden Wolves scored six runs on just four hits with Joe Ginder, Thomas Faggioni, Smith, and Lucas Floyd driving in runs for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves kept their foot on the gas in the bottom of the third, adding four runs onto their lead. The bottom of the third was highlighted by a two-run RBI by Faggioni through the left side. Nick Nutile and Faggioni also came around to score in the bottom of the third to give Alvernia the 11-5 advantage.

Alvernia added six more runs over the next two innings to hold a 17-5 advantage going into the sixth.

The Lions got four runs back in the top of the sixth on just one hit to make it a 17-9 game going into the bottom of the sixth.

Albright retired Alvernia in order in the bottom of the sixth, but the Golden Wolves rebounded in the seventh. Alvernia returned the favor in the top of the seventh, retiring the Lions in order to start the inning.

The Golden Wolves then added two more to its lead in the bottom half of the inning, with an error on Billy Dougar's at-bat allowing Rogacki and Luca Grammatica to score for the 19-9 Alvernia advantage.

Alvernia again retired the side in the top of the eighth before putting up six runs in the bottom half of the inning for the second time.

The Golden Wolves pinch hit for nearly the entire starting lineup while batting around. Grant Hackett led things off with a single up the middle before scoring on a bases-loaded walk later in the inning for Alvernia's first run of the inning. Evan Thomas then drove in Connor Friedel before Jason Gilkey scored on another bases-loaded walk. Dougar then drove in Matthew Edwards on a ground out before Jason Kelly singled up the middle to drive in the final two runs of the inning and give Alvernia the 25-9 lead. 

Alvernia retired the side for the third straight inning to end the game with the 25-9 win.

Josh Kreider picked up the win in relief for Alvernia, striking out four in four and two thirds innings of work. 

Rogacki and Faggioni each finished with a team-high three hits. Rogacki also led Alvernia with five runs scored, and Faggioni and Brandon Smith finished with a team-high five RBIs.

Alvernia returns to action tomorrow, hosting Elizabethtown.
