Reading, Pa. (March 30, 2022) - Alvernia University's (6-8) offense came alive in a doubleheader sweep of Immaculata University (4-16) on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference softball action at Alvernia.
Playing in their 2022 home-opener, the Golden Wolves combined for 20 runs in ten innings as Alvernia took game one 11-2 and game two 9-1 in five innings each.Â
In game one of the afternoon, Immaculata took an early 2-0, but Alvernia responded with a big seven-run bottom of the first to take a 7-2 lead.Â
Julie Burkhardt drove in
Sarah Reinert on a single to the right-gap to put Alvernia on the board.
Brooke Weister then scored on an error during
Tara Tumasz's at-bat to even it up at 2-2. Then, back-to-back doubles from
Julie Burkhardt and
Kerstin Koenig put Alvernia up 4-2. Alvernia took a 5-2 lead on an error during
Megan Poley's at-bat, and the inning was capped off by a triple from
Sarah Reinert to bring in Poley for the 7-2 lead.
Alvernia added to its lead in the bottom of the second with Jacelyn Barbera driving in Burkhardt to put Alvernia up 8-2.
After ending a threat in the top of the third, Alvernia's offense kept things rolling in the bottom half of the frame with Tumasz driving in two on a double through the right side and Koenig driving in Tumasz on a groundout for the 11-2 lead.
Alvernia was retired in order in the bottom of the fourth and did not bat in the fifth after the game was called for a run-rule with Alvernia coming out on top 11-2.
Emma Kropkowski picked up the win, striking out six in four innings of work.Â
Burkhardt and Barbera led Alvernia with three hits each. Koenig and Tumasz each finished with three RBIs.
In game two of the series, Alvernia got on the board again in the bottom of the first with Tumasz driving in Reinert.
Alvernia's big inning of game two came in the bottom of the second, with Alvernia batting around and scoring seven runs on nine hits.
Alaina Snader drove in two runs on a double to right center, and Tumasz drove in two on a single to right. Koenig kept it rolling with a single up the middle to bring in
Brooke Weister.
Allison Kirschner capped off the inning with a two-run single to left field to put Alvernia up 8-0.Â
Alvernia's final run of the game once again came off the bat of Tumasz as she drove in Burkhardt to give Alvernia the 9-0 advantage.
The Mighty Macs spoiled Alvernia's shutout bid with a run in the top of the fourth. Alvernia held Immaculata to just one base runner in the top of the fifth as the Golden Wolves came away with the 9-1 win for the series sweep.
Kropkowski again got the start in game two, striking out three in the win.
Tumasz, Robinson, and Hudson led Alvernia with two hits each. Tumasz also led Alvernia with four RBIs.
Alvernia returns to action on Saturday hosting Stevenson in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader.Â
