Ft. Myers FL. (Mar. 8, 2022)- Alvernia University (3-6-1) split the day, securing a win against Haverford College (2-4) 8-3 and dropping the second contest against Thiel College (2-1) 11-10 in a non-conference baseball matchup Tuesday on day three in Fort Myers, FL.
The Golden Wolves had a quick start, jumping out to a 2-0 lead.
Zach Rogacki and
Nick Nutile crossed home plate to give Alvernia the early lead. The Fords quickly responded, driving in a batter of their own to cut the deficit in half.
The second inning was quick, with only Haverford recording a hit. Despite the opportunity, the Fords left the runner stranded. The top of the third saw the Golden Wolves' offense come to life. Rogacki once again passed home plate, this time scoring on a wild pitch. Nutile was next, scoring off a single from
Brandon Smith.
Thomas Faggioni helped extend the lead, scoring off a single from
Jason Kelly. This offensive explosion pushed the Golden Wolves' lead up to four, making the score 5-1.
Haverford trimmed the deficit to three in the bottom of the third, making it a 5-2 ballgame. Over the next two innings, the Fords found a way to quell Alvernia's offense while recording a run of their own to make it a two-point game. Despite the effort, the Golden Wolves broke through, tallying two quick scores in the top of the sixth. The first came from
Kyler Newton, while the second runner
Billy Dougar. Dougar was driven in by a single from
Josh Gilkey. This made the score 7-3 in favor of Alvernia.
With the Golden Wolves in prime position, Newton drove in Smith to tack on an extra point for insurance. Alvernia ended the game on top of Haverford, 8-3.
The Golden Wolves opened the scoring in the second contest. Faggioni was in prime position after a triple sent to right-center field. He was then batted in off a hit from Smith.
The Tom Cats responded in the top of the third inning, recording two runs to take a 2-1 lead over Alvernia. The Golden Wolves did not stay down for long, using the bottom of the fifth to make a big push. On a bases-loaded opportunity,
Joe Ginder recorded a single to left field, driving in
Mike Ramundo and
Lucas Floyd. Alvernia continued to apply pressure, with Nutile hitting a triple to right-center field. This drove in Ginder and
Billy Dougar, making the score 5-2 in favor of Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves grew their lead in the top of the seventh, with
Justin Ayala, Nutile, Ginder, and Kelly all crossing home plate. Alvernia took a 10-2 run into the bottom of the seventh.
Despite the deficit, Thiel did not back down from Alvernia. The Tom Cats had a big seventh inning, scoring seven runs to trim the Golden Wolves lead to just one. Thiel continued to push back, knotting the game up at ten apiece going into the ninth inning.
The Golden Wolves did have a scoring opportunity, but left the runner stranded to end the top of the ninth. The Tom Cats took advantage of the momentum, batting in the game-winning run off a home run and downing Alvernia 11-10.
Floyd led the Golden Wolves with four hits recording two doubles and a triple in the contest.
The Golden Wolves return to action tomorrow as they face off against Bluffton University
