Explosive Eighth Inning Pushes Golden Wolves Past Bluffton

Ft. Myers, FL. (Mar. 9, 2022)- Alvernia University (4-6-1) scored four runs in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie and come away with a 7-4 win over Bluffton University (1-5) in non-conference baseball action during day four in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Golden Wolves kicked off the contest in the top of the first, with a single from Nick Nutile allowing Justin Ayala to cross home plate and give Alvernia a 1-0 lead. The Beavers responded just half an inning later, evening the contest at one apiece.

Alvernia kept up the pace, with Brandon Smith being driven in from a double by Lucas Floyd. The Golden Wolves extended their lead, with Kyler Newton grounding out to second and allowing Floyd to cross home plate. The final point of the inning came from Billy Dougar, who was sent home off a double from Rogacki. Alvernia ended the top of the second on top of the Beavers, 4-1.

Over the next four innings, Bluffton climbed back into the contest, recording a score in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Over this same stretch, the Golden Wolves left six runners stranded on base. The contest was all tied at four apiece going into the eighth inning.

Newton opened the inning with a double, with Luca Grammatic recording a single to join him on base. Alvernia needed a big play with two runners on and found one on the bat of Rogacki, who stepped up and tripled. This allowed Newton and Grammatic to get home, giving Alvernia a 6-4 lead. Ayala later hit a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Rogacki and tacking on an insurance run for the Golden Wolves.

The Golden Wolves closed out the contest on top, defeating the Beavers 7-4.

Rogacki led the squad with three RBIs and two hits, while Newton had two hits and one RBI.

Jake Umans picked up the win with two innings of relief work, striking out two and not allowing a hit. Jack Cossa picked up the save with three strikeouts.

The Golden Wolves are back in action tomorrow as they face off against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
