Softball Splits Close Doubleheader with Ursinus

Collegeville, Pa. (April 13, 2022) - Alvernia University (9-11) split a non-conference doubleheader with Ursinus College (14-11) on Wednesday, with the host Bears taking game one and Alvernia taking game two.

Game one saw the Bears edge Alvernia by a 2-1 decision, while Alvernia was on the better end of a one-run decision in game two as the Golden Wolves bettered the Bears 5-4.

In game one of the doubleheader, Alvernia struck first with a run in the top of the first. After Sarah Reinert led off the game with a walk, she was able to come around and score on a sac fly by Allison Kirschner

The Golden Wolves kept Ursinus until the fourth inning when the Bears were able to string together two walks, reaching on an error, and a single to bring in their first and only two runs of the game to take a 2-1 lead.

A triple by Reinert in the top of the sixth and a double by Kirschner in the top of the seventh put runners in scoring position with no outs in both innings. But, Alvernia was not able to bring either runner home as Ursinus took the 2-1 win.

Game two of the afternoon, Reinert again led off the game with a walk. Brooke Weister then joined her on base after reaching on an infield single. Kirschner then drove both Reinert and Weister home on a double to center for the 2-0 lead.

Alvernia's lead did not last long as Ursinus evened it up at 2-2 in the bottom of the first on a two-run single.

The Golden Wolves bounced right back in the top of the second with Megan Poley driving in Payton Lascala for the 3-2 lead. Weister then drove in Poley on a sacrifice fly for Alvernia's second run of the inning for the 4-2 lead.

Ursinus got one back in the bottom of the third, but Alvernia was able to push its lead back to two in the top of the fifth with Kirschner driving in Reinert on her second double of the game in what would be a crucial run for the Golden Wolves for the 5-3 advantage.

The Bears tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth on an infield single to get back within one, 5-4.

The Bears threatened with runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh, but Alvernia was able to get out of both jams to come away with the 5-4 win.

Maggie Loomis got the win in the circle for Alvernia with one strikeout over four innings. Emma Kropkowski got the save with three strikeouts in three innings of work.

Kirschner and Reinert each finished with two hits, and Kirschner added three RBIs.

Alvernia is back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader at Dickinson.
