Carlisle, Pa. (April 14, 2022) - Alvernia University (10-12) dropped game one, 2-1, to Dickinson College (9-16) before holding off the Red Devils, 7-6, in game two for a non-conference series split on Thursday at Dickinson.
With the split, Alvernia's last four games have been decided by one run. Alvernia is .500 across those four games.
In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia stranded six base-runners across the first six innings while Dickinson built up a 2-0 lead with runs in the third and fourth innings.
Alvernia got one back in the top of the seventh with Julie Burkhardt scoring on a Payton Lascala single. The Golden Wolves threatened with Lascala representing the game-tying run on second base with one out. But, the Red Devils were able to retire Alvernia's next two batters to take the 2-1 win.
Kerstin Koenig led Alvernia with two hits on three at-bats in game one.
In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia did not wait until the seventh inning to get things started as the Golden Wolves plated four in the top of the first for the early 4-0 lead. With two on, Tara Tumasz hit a triple to center field to clear the bases and give Alvernia the 2-0 lead. After Devan Hudson was hit by a pitch in the next at bat, Koenig doubled to left field to drive in Tumasz and Hudson for the 4-0 lead.
Alvernia added three runs over the next three innings to extend its lead to 7-0. Both Brooke Weister and Burkhardt scored on base-running plays and Jaclyn Barbera hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth for Alvernia's seventh run of the game.
The Red Devils got one back in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded infield sacrifice hit to make it a 7-1 game.
Alvernia took the 7-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh and the Red Devils nearly completed a comeback. The Red Devils scored two runs on two hits with one out to get within four, 7-3. Alvernia made a pitching change and recorded another out, but Dickinson was able to score on the play to make it 7-4. The Red Devils added two more with two outs to get within one, 7-6. With runners on the corners, Alvernia forced the third out to escape with the 7-6 win.
Loomis got the start and win for Alvernia in the circle, and Emily Sano picked up her first career save.
Barbera led Alvernia's offense going 3-for-3 from the plate with a walk. She was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
Alvernia is back in action on Wednesday hosting Lebanon Valley in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader.
