Softball Swept by Eastern in MAC Commonwealth Doubleheader

Reading, Pa. (April 23, 2022) - Eastern University (18-9, 8-6) completed a doubleheader sweep of Alvernia University (11-15, 4-8) on Saturday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth softball doubleheader at Alvernia.

The Eagles took game one by a 12-6 decision and carried the momentum into game two with a 6-3 win over the Golden Wolves.

Eastern led things off in game one with a two-run top of the first. The Eagles added another two runs in the top of the third on a bases clearing double to go up 4-0.

Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the fourth with Tara Tumasz driving in Jaclyn Barbera on a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 4-1.

Eastern's offense exploded in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs on four hits to go up 10-1.

The Golden Wolves got three back in the bottom of the fifth. Barbera drove in two runs on her at-bat, scoring Payton Lascala and Hope Robinson. Tumasz capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly to bring in Brooke Weister and make it a 10-4 game.

Eastern extended its lead back to eight, 12-4, in the top of the sixth.

The Golden Wolves again responded in the bottom of the sixth to stay alive with Robinson and Devan Hudson scoring on Emily Sano's at-bat to bring Alvernia within six, 12-6.

While Alvernia held Eastern scoreless in the seventh, the Golden Wolves could not plate a run in the bottom of the seventh as Eastern came away with the 12-6 win.

Barbera and Robinson led Alvernia with two hits each in game one. Barbera and Tumasz each finished with two RBIs.

Eastern kept things rolling in game two with a leadoff double and scored its first two runs of the game two at-bats later with another double. Eastern then doubled its lead to 4-0 in the top of the second with a two-run double.

The Golden Wolves got one back in the bottom of the third with Barbera doubling to center field to drive in Kinsey Moses to make it a 4-1 game.

Alvernia stranded two in the bottom of the fourth, with both runners in scoring position.

The Eagles added two to their lead in the top of the fifth to make it a 6-1 game, but Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double to left by Robinson to bring in Barbera.

Alvernia held Eastern scoreless the rest of the way, and the Golden Wolves threatened the Eastern lead in the bottom of the seventh.

Robinson singled through the left side to bring in Moses and make it a three run game, 6-3.

Alvernia had the tying run at the plate with two runners on, but Eastern was able to get out of the jam for the 6-3 win.

Barbera and Robinson led Alvernia with two hits, and Robinson led Alvernia with two RBIs.
