Alvernia Rolls by Widener, 11-1

Reading, Pa. (April 25, 2022) - Alvernia University (15-21-2, 8-5) picked up a crucial MAC Commonwealth win to open its series with Widener University (19-16, 8-5) on Monday as the Golden Wolves took an 11-1 win over the Pride at Alvernia's Angelica Park.

Alvernia put up a five-spot in the second inning and never looked back, holding the Pride to just four hits and one run. While a playoff berth is not yet clinched, Alvernia moved into a two-way tie for third with Widener - but this series was the only one played today, with the rest of the early-week MAC Commonwealth games scheduled for Tuesday.

Billy Dougar led off Alvernia's big second inning with a double that buzzed down the left field line. He scored two at-bats later when Luca Grammatica singled through the left side. Alvernia's second run of the inning came off of Justin Ayala's at-bat. With the bases loaded, Ayala hit a grounder to third base. Widener's third baseman opted to get the out at third instead of the force out at home.

With the bases getting loaded back up on a single by Nick Nutile, the Pride walked Thomas Faggioni to bring Alvernia's third run home. Matt Edwards then drove in Ayala on a sacrifice fly and Mike Ramundo capped off the inning with a single to center field to drive in Nutile for the 5-0 lead.

Widener scored what would be its only run of the game in the top of the third on an RBI single up the middle.

Alvernia extended its lead back to five runs in the bottom half of the third as Zach Rogacki brought in Grammatica on a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Golden Wolves were held hitless in the fourth inning before tacking on two in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Josh Gilkey reached on an opposite field double to right field to put a runner on second, and Grammatica then drove in Gilkey on an outfield single. Rogacki then scored Grammatica on a triple off the right field wall to put Alvernia up 8-1.

Alvernia kept things rolling in the bottom of the sixth with Dougar recording his second double of the afternoon - in nearly the exact same spot as his first - to bring in Thomas Faggioni and Nutile. Gilkey then drove in Alvernia's final run of the game on a groundout to short to bring in Ramundo for the 11-1 lead.

Widener never threatened in the final innings as Alvernia came away with the 11-1 win.

Nick Calicari got the start for Alvernia, allowing just four hits and striking out two. Jake Umans got his fifth win of the year with a three and two thirds inning relief appearance. Umans did not allow a hit and walked just two batters. Anthony Mortimer continued on with Umans hitless streak, not giving up a hit in the final inning of work.

Nutile and Grammatica each finished with three hits, and Grammatica finished with two RBIs. Rogacki and Dougar each finished with two hits and two RBIs.

Alvernia is back in action on Friday at Widener to close out its series with the Pride.
