Barbera Homers Three Times, Alvernia Sweeps Albright

Reading, Pa. (April 27, 2022) - Jaclyn Barbera went yard three times and Alvernia University (14-16, 6-8) combined for 21 runs in a series sweep over Albright College (3-27, 2-12) on Wednesday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at Albright.

The Golden Wolves defeated Albright by an 11-0 decision in game one, scoring eight of those 11 runs in the sixth inning. Alvernia then turned around and defeated Albright 10-4 in game two. Barbera hit her first homer of the day in game one and added two in game two.

In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia got out to an early 2-0 lead with Barbera going deep on the first pitch of her at bat for a two-run homer to center field. The Golden Wolves then added one on to their lead in the top of the third with Maggie Loomis driving in Sarah Reinert on a single.

Alvernia's bats came alive in the top of the sixth, with a single by Kerstin Koenig driving in Megan Poley for Alvernia's first run of the innings. Hope Robinson then doubled to bring in Koenig and Carlen Lazar, and Reinert reached on an error to bring in Robinson. A single by Loomis and double by Barbera brought in two more for the Golden Wolves. The inning was capped off by Allison Kirschner and Lazar each recording RBIs for Alvernia's 11-0 lead.

The Golden Wolves kept Albright off the board in the bottom of the sixth for the 11-0 shutout win.

Loomis picked up the complete game shutout with two strikeouts and gave up just five hits.

Loomis and Barbera each finished with three hits, and Barbera had three RBIs in game one.

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia put up four runs on five hits to get things rolling in the top of the first. Barbera scored the first two runs of the game with a double to bring in Reinert and Loomis. Tara Tumasz then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Barbera, and Robinson drove in Kirschner on a single.

Alvernia then put up five runs in the top of the fifth. Reinert drove in the first two of the inning on a single to bring in Devan Hudson and Koenig. With two on later in the inning, Barbera stepped up and launched her second homer of the afternoon to push Alvernia's lead to 9-0.

Albright fended off the run-rule in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run home of its own to make it a 9-3 contest.

In the top of the sixth, Barbera smashed her third homer of the day to take Alvernia's lead back up to six, 10-3. Albright also added one to its score in the bottom of the sixth frame to stay within six, 10-4.

The score stayed at 10-4 the remainder of the way as Alvernia game away with the series sweep.

Emma Kropkowski picked up the game two win for Alvernia with a six strikeout performance.

Barbera went three-for-three with six RBIs to lead Alvernia in game two. Her six RBIs are the most in a game since Brianna Coan recorded eight on a spring break game in 2013.

Alvernia concludes its regular season on Saturday with a home series against Messiah.
