Erika Whitmoyer broke the career assist record, but Alvernia University (8-9, 2-6) fell to Lebanon Valley College (8-9, 4-4) 23-10 in the 2022 season finale of MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.
Whitmoyer needed two assists coming in to today's game to break the record of 92 held by Samantha Landis '12. Whitmoyer needed just four minutes to break the record, recording her 93rd career assist on a goal by Mackenzie McKinney.Â
The Golden Wolves led Lebanon Valley early and trailed by just 12-7 at the half. But, the Dutchmen held Alvernia to just three goals in the second half while scoring 11 of their own for the 23-10 final.
Alvernia took the opening drive down the field and Whitmoyer dished a pass to Haleigh Lackner for the 1-0 early lead for Alvernia.
The Dutchmen responded with a goal off the ensuing draw and rattled off three more for the 4-1 lead after just under four minutes.
The Golden Wolves got one back with the record-breaking connection between Whitmoyer and McKinney, and got within one, 4-3 on a goal by Olivia McCambly.Â
The Dutchmen and Golden Wolves traded goals the rest of the first quarter, with Alvernia recording goals from Whitmoyer, Lackner, and a time-expiring goal by Sophia Ruocco. The Dutchmen held a 9-6 lead going into the second quarter.
Alvernia opened the second quarter with a goal by McCambly to get within two, 9-7, but the Dutchmen held Alvernia scoreless the rest of the quarter while recording three goals of their own to take a 12-7 lead into the second half.Â
Lebanon Valley opened the second half with four goals to extend its lead to 16-7.
Alvernia outscored Lebanon Valley 2-1 in the final minutes of the third quarter - with both goals from Lackner - to make it a 17-9 game going into the final frame.Â
Alvernia was held to just one goal in the final 15 minutes - off the stick of Megan Moky as time expired - while Lebanon Valley scored six more for the 23-10 final.Â
McCambly and Lackner each finished with three goals, and Whitmoyer finished with one goal and three assists.
Alvernia finishes the 2022 season seventh in the MAC Commonwealth. Alvernia went 8-9 overall, a four game improvement from 2021.Â
